Men’s Soccer drops Wednesday match at Omaha

10/2/2024 9:41:00 PM | Men's Soccer

Hoelscher scores, Krenc tallies five saves in 2-1 defeat

OMAHA, Neb. – The St. Thomas Men's Soccer traveled to Nebraska for its first conference road match of the season.  In the Summit League battle, the Tommies (3-4-2, 0-2-0 Summit) scored the first of the match, but ultimately fell to Omaha (6-2-2, 1-1-0 Summit) on Wednesday evening.

RECAP
In the competitive Summit League match up, the two squads were each battling for their first conference win of the season.

St. Thomas would get on the board first at Caniglia Field, as Charlie Hoelscher netted his second of the season off a centering pass from Jorge Pacheco in the 38th minute of play. With time running down in the first half, Omaha found the equalizer, sending the game into halftime-break knotted at 1-1.

Opening the second frame with a shot from Faris Colic, the Tommies' offense continued its pressure, backed by solid defending for the Purple.

After four shots for the Mavericks and two saves by Moritz Krenc, Omaha found the go-ahead goal at the midpoint of the second half. The second-half goal proved to be the difference as the Mavericks came away with a 2-1 win over the Tommies.

In the first 90 minutes of play, Krenc tallied three saves, totaling five through today's match. Krenc currently leads the Summit League in saves per game (4.56) and total saves (41) through nine games played.

QUOTABLE
"Our effort and trust in the game-play and each other was right where it needed to be," Head Coach Jon Lowery said. "Proud of the team for how we played, and we'll take away many positives against a talented Omaha team."
