Tommies take on Gophers, Jackrabbits in Friday triangular

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas swim and dive teams were back in action Friday, October 18 and continued to show improvement in its second meet of 2024-25. The Tommies took on both the University of Minnesota and South Dakota State University in a Friday evening triangular and put together several strong performances against their foes. The St. Thomas men fell to Minnesota 251-47 and South Dakota State 151-147, while the women also fell to both the Gophers (253-47) and Jackrabbits (154.5-145.5).
MEN'S RESULTS:
St. Thomas opened the night with a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay, setting the tone for the remainder of the night. The Tommies "A" team of Tucker Holmes (Rochester, Minn. / John Marshall), Jensen Richard (Rochester, Minn. / Century), Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings) and Carter Fask (Elmhurst, Minn. / Fenwick) finished fifth in the men's first event of the evening thanks to a time of 1:34.29. The "B" team of John Wion (Ashley, Ohio / Big Walnut), Sean Bannon (Rochester, Minn.), Nicholas Salido (Kansas City, Mo. / Rockhurst) and Morgan Gillard (Woodbury, Minn. / East Ridge) finished in seventh with a time of 1:34.67.
Fask and Salido put together outstanding performances in the 50 freestyle, claiming two top-4 spots in the fastest race of the night. Fask finished in third with a time of 21.23, while Salido was just tenths of a second behind in fourth with a time of 21.28. The junior went on to finish seventh in the 100 free, while Gillard claimed sixth place with a time of 47.24.
Jensen continued his strong start in the backstroke races, earning a fourth place finish in the 100 race with a time of 50.96. He then finished sixth in the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:55.24 and fifth in the 100 IM with a time of 53.29.
Other individuals found plenty of success in the pool, including Sam Sacor (Park Ridge, Ill. / Century). The freshman claimed fourth place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:08.18, while Richard earned top-8 finishes in both breaststroke races with times of 58.55 (100) and 2:10.49 (200).
Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha West) and Holmes went back-to-back in the 200 freestyle to earn top-8 finishes for St. Thomas. Foti finished in sixth with a time of 1:44.12, while Holmes earned a seventh place finish with a time of 1:45.16. The duo would also compete in the 500 freestyle, with Foti finishing fifth thanks to a time of 4:43.90. Holmes closed in eighth with a time of 4:47.08.
Tommy Seiler (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) opened his night with a fifth place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.88. He then went on to finish seventh in the 500 free thanks to a time of 4:47.80.
Charlie Folks (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie) was St. Thomas' highest finisher in the 400 IM, coming in eighth with a time of 4:19.56.
Austin Kantor (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) was the lone Tommie diver to score Friday evening, earning a fourth place finish in the 3-meter competition with a score of 246.40. Kantor also finished fourth in the 1-meter competition with a score of 240.20.
The men's 400 freestyle relay team of Foti, Gillard, Salido and Cole Johnson (Fitchburg, Wis. / Madison) closed the night with a fifth place finish in the race thanks to their time of 3:07.81.
WOMEN'S RESULTS:
While Minnesota claimed the top four spots in the 200 medley relay, the Tommies "A" team of Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation), Amber Hess (Kohler, Wis. / Kohler), Jordyn Davis (Cambridge, Wis. / Cambridge) and Madeline Francois (Sartell, Minn. / Sartell) was the top non-Gopher team in the race. The group earned a fifth place finish in the 200 medley relay thanks to a time of 1:47.68. St. Thomas' "B" team also earned a top-8 finish in the race, as Willow Larsen (Fairfield, Iowa / Fairfield), Ashley Plantenberg (Eden Prairie, Minn. / Eden Prairie), Lily Linden (Rochester, Minn. / Century) and Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) finished seventh with a time of 1:49.92.
Davis also made waves in the 100 backstroke, as she was the highest Summit League finisher at Friday's triangular. The first year broke up another top-4 finish for Minnesota in the 100 backstroke, coming in fourth with a time of 58.78. Larson and Forsberg also earned top-8 finishes in the race with times of 1:00.03 and 1:00.14 respectively.
Hess was another member of the 200 medley relay team to find success in her individual events. The first year earned a fourth place finish in the 100 breaststroke, clocking a time of 1:06.99 in the race, before finishing fifth in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:27.55. She also earned a top-5 finish in the 100IM with a time of 1:01.30. Francois earned a top-3 finish in the 50 free, clocking a time of 24.16 to finish third behind the Gophers Mina Kaljevic and Georgia Kahler. Fischer finshed fifth in the same race with a time of 24.53.
Tessa Jones (Marengo, Ill. / Marian Central Catholic) and Kathryn Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Visitation) earned top-8 finishes in the 400 IM, coming in fifth and eighth with times of 4:39.52 and 4:44.93 respectively. Bonneville also earned a fifth place finish in the 200 backstroke with a tie of 2:09.67, while teammate Hrace Hehr (Mason City, Iowa / Newman Catholic) finished seventh with a time of 2:09.95.
Individuals also found plenty of success in the freestyle races. Mary Selden (Davenport, Iowa / Davenport Central) earned a top-8 finish in the 200 freestyle thanks to her time of 1:57.02 in the race. Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Naperville Central and Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South) both earned top-8 finishes in the 500 free with times of 5:16.67 and 5:21.12.
On the boards, St. Thomas earned three top-8 finishes, with Hattie Opdahl (Lindstrom, Minn. / Chisago Lakes) leading the way for the second consecutive meet. The sophomore was the highest finishing non-Gopher in the 1-meter diving event, closing in fifth place with a six-dive score of 236.60. Teammates Zoey Johnson (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) and Norah Tait (Wauwatosa, Wis. / Wauwatosa East) finished in sixth and eighth respectively in the 1-meter competition with scores of 206.55 and 186.05 respectively. On the 3-meter board, Opdhal earned her second fifth place finish of the night with a six-dive score of 242.30, while Johnson finished seventh.

Other individuals found plenty of success in the pool, including Sam Sacor (Park Ridge, Ill. / Century). The freshman claimed fourth place in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:08.18, while Richard earned top-8 finishes in both breaststroke races with times of 58.55 (100) and 2:10.49 (200).
Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / Waukesha West) and Holmes went back-to-back in the 200 freestyle to earn top-8 finishes for St. Thomas. Foti finished in sixth with a time of 1:44.12, while Holmes earned a seventh place finish with a time of 1:45.16. The duo would also compete in the 500 freestyle, with Foti finishing fifth thanks to a time of 4:43.90. Holmes closed in eighth with a time of 4:47.08.
Tommy Seiler (Menomonee Falls, Wis. / Menomonee Falls) opened his night with a fifth place finish in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:56.88. He then went on to finish seventh in the 500 free thanks to a time of 4:47.80.

Fischer finshed fifth in the same race with a time of 24.53.
Tessa Jones (Marengo, Ill. / Marian Central Catholic) and Kathryn Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Visitation) earned top-8 finishes in the 400 IM, coming in fifth and eighth with times of 4:39.52 and 4:44.93 respectively. Bonneville also earned a fifth place finish in the 200 backstroke with a tie of 2:09.67, while teammate Hrace Hehr (Mason City, Iowa / Newman Catholic) finished seventh with a time of 2:09.95.
