Men’s Hockey splits with Northern Michigan; Sibell saves 26 in 3-1 win

1/20/2024 8:55:00 PM | Men's Hockey

Lucas Wahlin, Cooper Gay, and Ryan O’Neill each scored in the Toms 3-1 win over the Wildcats as Sibell wins his seventh of the season with 26-save effort.

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Tommie Men's Hockey (12-11-1, 10-6-0 CCHA) utilized a well-balanced attack in an all-around team effort to take down the Northern Michigan Wildcats (8-12-2, 6-8-0 CCHA) 3-1 and secure the CCHA series split.

The Toms remain in first place in the conference and are the first team to 30 points this season. They scored one goal in each frame from three different players. Cooper Gay's second period shorthanded goal was the game-winner and Jake Sibell earned his seventh win of the season in net.

RECAP
Game one on Friday had 20 minutes of penalties between the two teams, fitting that in a game two with 64 minutes of penalties, there were quick coincidental minors called at :31. Half a minute into the game, both teams skated four-on-four. No goals came in those two minutes and the game remained scoreless for much of the first period.

Two more penalties were called, one for each side, but still no goals until 16:53. With puck control in the offensive zone, Matthew Gleason and Liam Malmquist teamed up in tic-tack-toe fashion to find Lucas Wahlin for a one-time goal to put the Toms out in front. The Toms earned another power play at the end of the period but headed to the intermission with a 1-0 lead.

The theme of special teams continued deep into the second period. Andre Ghantous utilized a screen from his teammate on the power play to get the puck by Jake Sibell. The Tommies reviewed the goal, and it was overturned for goaltender interference. Just moments after the ruling, Ghantous finished what he started and tied the game at 14:43.

Cole Miller got hit with a slashing penalty and the momentum seemed to be shifting toward the Wildcats. Until Cooper Gay turned the home team over in the neutral zone and beat the netminder through the five-hole for his eighth of the season.

The Toms' Ryan O'Neill added an insurance goal in the third period at 8:02. The defense fended off eight shots on goal in the period and survived an onslaught of 30 shot attempts.

Northern Michigan outshot the Purple 27-24 and won 43 of 68 faceoffs in the game.
