ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Thomas men's basketball released its complete 2023-24 schedule Wednesday, which includes the season opener at California and a December trip to play Marquette.

The 2023-24 season begins Nov. 6 as head coach Johnny Tauer leads the Tommies into Berkley, Calif., to face the Golden Bears under first-year head coach and former Minnesota Timberwolves player Mark Madsen.

St. Thomas welcomes Idaho State to Schoenecker Arena Nov. 10 for its home opener followed two days later with a matchup against North Central (Minn.) at home. The Tommies return to the state of California for a three-game tournament Nov. 17-19, first taking on Cal Poly on Friday, followed by host-school California Baptist on Saturday, and wrapping up Sunday against Portland State.

The Tommies remain on the road Nov. 25 against Green Bay and Dec. 1 at Western Michigan before returning home for the first time in nearly a month on Dec. 6 against Milwaukee. St. Thomas then travels to Chicago State on Dec. 10 before moving north to face Marquette, the defending Big East regular-season and tournament champions. The Golden Eagles were a No. 2 seed in the 2023 NCAA DI Men's Basketball Championship and is ranked among the top 10 in the "way-too-early polls" from FOX Sports (No. 2 nationally), CBS Sports (No. 6 nationally), and ESPN (No. 10 nationally).

After completing the road portion of its non-conference schedule (with the exception of the Big Sky-Summit League Challenge), St. Thomas returns to Schoenecker Arena Dec. 17 to take on Crown (Minn.) and Dec. 21 to play UW-River Falls.

The 16-game Summit League schedule begins Dec. 29 with a road contest at North Dakota before ending the calendar year Dec. 31 at home against Kansas City. Following the New Year holiday, St. Thomas travels to Moscow, Idaho on Jan. 3 to open the two-game Big Sky-Summit League Challenge against Idaho. The Purple welcome Sacramento State to St. Paul on Jan. 6 to close out the challenge.

The Tommies will face each Summit League school twice during conference play and end the regular season March 2 at home against Denver. The 2024 Summit League Championships tip-off March 8 with the title game held on March 12, all at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Tauer, who is on pace to coach his 350th game with the Tommies this season, is entering his 13th year as head coach of St. Thomas men's basketball in 2023-24. He helped the Purple take a leap forward from season one to two of the NCAA DI transition, moving from 10 wins to 19 victories. The Tommies also notched their first NCAA DI postseason victory at the 2023 Summit League Championships and finished 12-2 at Schoenecker Arena to rank among the top 25 percent of NCAA DI teams in home winning percentage.
