Fighting Hawks take down Tommies to end road trip

Gustafson led Toms with 10 kills, added 7 digs

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- St. Thomas volleyball went back-and-forth early during a 3-0 loss at North Dakota (23-25, 17-25, 15-25) to complete its Summit League road trip. Freshman Ellie Gustafson led the Tommies with 10 kills and added seven digs as the Tommies fall to 4-10 overall and 0-3 in conference play.

RECAP
The match started out close with a 25-23 win for North Dakota after twelve tied scores throughout the set. The Tommies had a 12-9 lead but after a 5-1 run for the Fighting Hawks, the game was tied back up at 14-14. After back-and-forth points the score was tied again at 20-20, but North Dakota scored five of the last seven to take the win. Gustafson totaled four kills with the help of freshman setter Morgan Kealy who totaled nine assists in the first set.

The Fighting Hawks came out hot with a 7-1 lead to start set two. One kill each from Kealy, Gustafson, and sophomore Tezra Rudzitis, along with a block from Gustafson and Rudzitis, helped the Tommies tighten the gap to 10-8, but they were never able to take the lead. Nine of the last 10 points went to UND, solidifying their second set win.

The third set started similar to the second with a 7-2 lead for the Fighting Hawks. The Tommies weren't able to overcome this early deficit and finished on a 25-15 loss. Freshman hitter Kaitlynn Peterson had three kills for the Tommies as well as a block assist with senior hitter Ellie Dammann.

TOP TOMMIES
  • Freshman hitter Ellie Gustafson finished the game with 11 points, seven digs, two block assists, and 10 kills. It was her fifth match recording double-digit kills and a hitting percentage above .231.
  • Freshman setter Morgan Kealy led the team with 17 assists as well as adding eight digs, two block assists, and two kills. She's now led the Tommies in assists through all 14 matches this season.
  • Sophomore middle Megan Wetter totaled seven points for the Tommies with six kills and two block assists. Her 42 total blocks this season rank tied for ninth in the Summit League.
  • Sophomore libero Ella Voegele had 10 digs, four assists and one service ace. She remains second in the Summit League with 4.20 digs per set.
QUOTEABLES
Head Coach Thanh Pham on how the match progressed after the back-and-forth set one:
"We were confident we could compete with a good UND team but our serve receive broke down a bit and it was hard to recover. This road trip has shown us a lot of things we want to improve on. We are committed to improving."

UP NEXT
The Tommies next two games will be played in Schoenecker Arena to continue Summit League play Oct. 5 and 7. Their first match up of the weekend is against University of Denver at 7 p.m. on Thursday, October 5, with the second against Oral Roberts University at 11 a.m. on Saturday, October 7.
