Kealy records double-double as St. Thomas wins set three

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- St. Thomas volleyball found its first set win of conference play but fell short during a four-set battle to Denver (17-25, 19-25, 25-22, 25-21). Freshman Ellie Gustafson led the Tommies with 13 kills with an additional nine digs followed by sophomore Kaitlynn Peterson who ended the night with 11 kills.

RECAP
The Tommies fell behind the Pioneers quickly in the first set, 19-12. Impressive defense by St. Thomas, starting with a diving dig from sophomore Ella Voegele and ending with a block by fellow sophomore Kaitlynn Peterson, brought energy that led to a quick 3-1 run. Denver answered back with the five of the final eight points to seal set one.

A trio of Tommies recorded multiple kills early, including three by sophomore middle blocker Megan Wetter, to give the Purple an 11-8 lead. The Pioneers followed with a 5-0 run to lead for the remainder of the set, despite the Tommies pulling within one, 19-18.

Gustafson scored three of the first four points for the Tommies to open set three. Including a service ace from sophomore setter Keya Luta Win Hunt. The 4-2 lead was extended to a set-high five points, 9-4. Denver later went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, but Gustafson added an additional three kills to help the Tommies close the third set with eight of the final 12 points.

The fourth set continued back-and-forth as the Tommies and Pioneers totaled 10 tied scores and five lead changes throughout the set. A kill by senior Claire Ricard helped the Tommies keep a lead at the 9-8 mark. A kill from sophomore setter Keya Luta Win Hunt pushed the Tommie lead to 16-14 before Denver scored five straight points and six of the final nine to seal the match.

QUOTEABLES
Head Coach Thanh Pham on message to team heading into third set:
"We were creating our own errors and giving (Denver) points instead of making them earn it. I think that when we make Denver earn a ton of points, we also earned points at the same clip and ended up beating them in the third set."

UP NEXT
The Tommies are back at Schoenecker Arena on Saturday, Oct. 7 to face off against Oral Roberts University at 11 a.m.
