9/28/2023 6:32:00 PM | Women's Soccer
Tommies fought tooth and nail against perennial powerhouse Denver, but the Pioneers ultimately came out on top.
ST. PAUL, Minn. –The St. Thomas Women's Soccer team fell short with a 2-1 loss to the Denver Pioneers. A slow start to the game in the first half, followed by a strong second half performance by the Tommies ended in a loss.
Offensively, the Tommies launched 7 shots and put 4 on goal with one getting by the Pioneer goalkeeper Molly Wissman. Jasmine Gates had the only goal for the Tommies in the 2-1 loss.
RECAP
The Tommies started off the game to a slow start only getting one shot in the first half. Tommie goalkeeper Olivia Rowe saved 3 shots in the first half while only allowing one goal.
The second half started off with continued pressure from the Tommies which led to a goal in the 59th minute from Jasmine Gates off a turnover from the Pioneer goalkeeper on a goal kick to tie the game at one. Shortly after that the Pioneers ended up coming back in the 64th minute and scoring off a free kick to go up 2-1.
The Tommies continued their strong attack for the rest of the half getting 3 more shots and one on target while also not allowing the Pioneers to score another goal. But their attempt to find the game tying goal fell just short.

Quotables
Head Coach Sheila McGill on her teams strong effort against Denver
"We focused all week on making sure we were defensively sound and that was something we did well today. We also wanted to explode, we did not want to just sit in. We wanted to defend strong as a unit and then explode out, and man our explosions were fun. If that is the performance we can give against the rest of the teams in the conference, we are going to be ready."
