ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Thomas men's basketball program added another body to its 2023-24 roster in incoming freshman Ben Oosterbaan, the program and Head Coach John Tauer announced Friday.

"We are thrilled to have Ben Oosterbaan join St. Thomas and our basketball program!" Tauer said. "He is an outstanding young man of high character, an excellent student, and a talented and hard-working player coming off a superb senior season at Hinsdale Central."

A 6-foot-6-inch guard from Hinsdale, Ill., Oosterbaan was an Illinois All-State Second Team selection by the Chicago Sun Times, Illinois Basketball Coaches Association and the Associated Press, and was named the Suburban Life Player of the Year. He also earned MVP honors at the Illinois All-State Game and the Hinsdale Holiday Classic Tournament.

Oosterbaan averaged 20.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.0 steals per game as a senior, which included a Hinsdale Central High School single-season record 707 points, surpassing Brian Wardle who is currently the head men's basketball coach at Bradley University. Oosterbaan helped his team to a school-record 31 wins as he shot 41.5 percent from beyond the arc.

"His versatility as a big guard will fit well in our offense's schemes and his competitiveness is evident only a few days into practice," Tauer said.

"We have established a strong connection in Chicago and are grateful for another player from that area to join the Tommies. Ben joins fellow Illinois natives Raheem Anthony, Dom Martinelli, and Bennett Kwiecisnki on our current roster, along with recent graduates Kevin Cunningham and Will Engels."

Oosterbaan originally committed to play baseball at the University of Michigan before deciding to pursue basketball with the Tommies. He was an Illinois High School Association Scholastic Achievement Award winner and an all-academic student-athlete.

Hailing from a family of athletes, Oosterbaan is the son of David and Lindsay Oosterbaan and has three siblings: Olivia, Jack and Lily. His father played tennis at the University of Iowa, his sister currently plays tennis at the University of Montana, and his grandfather and uncle both played basketball at Michigan. Oosterbaan plans to major in finance with a minor in marketing at St. Thomas.

"Ben has a bright future at St. Thomas on the court and in the classroom, and we welcome him and his parents, David and Lindsay, to St. Thomas," Tauer said.

The current roster for Tommie Men's Basketball is comprised of 15 student-athletes, including four newcomers in Oosterbaan, grad transfer Raheem Anthony, and freshmen Adam Tauer and Hayden Tibbits.
