Vos shines with five hits, St. Thomas falls to Western Illinois 5-4

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Joe Vos recorded the program's first five-hit game of the NCAA Division I era Sunday as St. Thomas baseball fell 5-4 to Western Illinois to wrap up its home and Summit League schedule.
Five Tommies have totaled four-hit games over the past two seasons, including one by Vos this year, before he went 5-of-5 from the plate at Koch Diamond on Senior Day. The sophomore scored one run and hit doubles in the fourth and seventh innings.
Ben Vujovich's leadoff on-base streak continued Sunday as he led off the bottom of the first inning with a single to right field. He walked or hit to lead off every game during the series against Western Illinois and extended his hitting streak to six games.
Max Skilbeck started for the Tommies and went 2.0 innings, allowing one walk and three hits. The Tommie defense came up with double plays in each of the first two innings to keep WIU off the board.
A throwing error during the first at-bat of the third inning set up two unearned runs for a 2-0 Leatherneck lead. Brigs Richartz singled with one out during the bottom half and cut the deficit in half after scoring on a throwing error, a failed back pickoff attempt from catcher to first base.
Vos scored his lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning after leading off with his first double. Sam Kulesa singled up the middle to drive in Vos and tie the game 2-2. Matthew Enck singled to extend his hitting streak to five games before a fielder's choice and foul out ended any chances of St. Thomas taking the lead.
Following one run by Western Illinois in the fifth to regain the lead, Kulesa tied it again with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth. The home run was his first of the season and fourth in his career, last hitting on May 14, 2022 at South Dakota State.
WIU again took the lead with a one-run inning in the eighth before a leadoff walk by Enck set up a bunt single by Vujovich, which moved the runner to third. Richartz grounded into a double play during the next at-bat, which allowed Enck to score and tie the game 4-4.
A solo home run with one out looked to be caught at the top of the fence by Richartz in left field, but the ball bounced off his glove for another go-ahead home run by the Leathernecks.
The Tommies left 13 runners on base but did not strike out at the plate. Walker Retz (1-6) led the pitching staff with four strikeouts but took the loss following the ninth inning home run.
Kulesa drove in two RBI and scored one run while going 2-of-5 from the plate while Vujovich also went 2-of-5.
St. Thomas wraps up its 2023 season May 18-20 with a three-game series at New Mexico State.
