Vujovich leadoff streak continues in 13-3 loss to Leathernecks

5/13/2023 4:36:00 PM | Baseball

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Ben Vujovich extended his leadoff on-base streak to five games Saturday as St. Thomas baseball fell to Western Illinois 13-3 in seven innings at Koch Diamond.

Vujovich led off the Tommie batting order with a home run, which marks the fifth straight game he has reached base to start a game. He took over the leadoff spot during the first game of the Western Illinois series May 9 and has totaled a team-best eight hit and six RBI to go along with two walks over the last five games.

The Leathernecks crossed the first runs in the top of the first inning following a one-out walk, an RBI triple and a wild pitch. Vujovich's solo shot in the bottom half cut the WIU lead to 2-1.

Jacob Mrosko (0-3) threw 4.1 innings for the Tommies and stranded WIU runners in the second and third before retiring the side in order to move to the fifth. Mrosko finished with a career high five strikeouts, including two in the first inning and two in the third.

Following one run by the Leathernecks in the top of the fifth, Matthew Enck singled to lead off the home half and later scored on a fielding error with the bases loaded. The Tommie threat was the second inning leaving the bases loaded, as the team left nine runners stranded through the game.

WIU put together back-to-back one-out home runs in the sixth inning to set up six runs on four hits. The lead was extended after the Leathernecks crossed four runs on two hits in the seventh.

Enck went 2-of-3 from the plate and extended his hitting streak to four games, one shy of Vujovich for the team lead.

The Tommies and Leathernecks continue the series at 1 p.m. Saturday from Koch Diamond.
