Track and Field is Fargo bound for Summit outdoor meet

St. Paul, Minn. – With last week's final home meet of the season in the books, Tommie Men's and Women's Track and Field gears up for the Summit League Championships, set for Thursday through Saturday, May 11-13, on the NDSU campus in Fargo, N.D. 

There will be eight men's teams and nine women's teams competing. Events will commence at 11 a.m. on Thursday with them wrapping up at about 7:45 p.m. On day two and three of the competition, events will begin at noon and run through 7 p.m. on Friday, and run from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.

St. Thomas Men's Track and Field was tabbed to finish in a tie for fourth in the Summit League this spring after a fourth-place showing at the conference indoor meet. Coach Pete Wareham's men's squad has recorded several impressive performances, including a few all-time program best times and marks plus personal bests. The Purple have 67 top-25 individual performances on the conference outdoor list, including 18 ranked in the top 10.

The Tommie Women were picked to finish sixth in the Summit League outdoor meet, after a seventh-place team indoor showing. Coach Ashley Lucas' team has 46 top-25 individual performances on the conference outdoor list, including 12 ranked in the top 10.

2023 Summit Indoor Meet Highlights

Sam May won the heptathlon but is out this spring with a season-ending injury. Jack Rosner scored eight points in the heptathlon with a score of 5,171. He also added two team points with a seventh place in the 60 hurdles in 8.33. 

Nate Raddatz took sixth place with 4,947 points in the hep and is among the favorites in the decathlon.

Morey Smith took fourth in the mile in 4:10.97. 

Brett Ringer (49.25) and Mitchell Piehl (50.24) placed fifth and eighth in the 400 dash. 

Max Gifford placed fifth in the 800 in 1:53.91. 

Isaiah Hopf (22.24) and Eric Douville (22.36) placed 5-7 in the 200.

In the 60 hurdles, Sam Duffing (8.32), Rosner (8.33) and Carter Maack (8.35) placed 6-7-8.

The Toms also placed fourth in the 4x400 relay in 3:20.55 with Calvin Bream, Piehl, Thomas Dundon and Ringer.

For the Tommie women, they placed fifth in the 4x400 relay in 4:01.38. Hannah CorneliusTaynian WalgraveHailey Hindt and Alicia Belany comprised the foursome.

Other Sunday points came from Alexis Pratt in the 60 dash (seventh, 7.82); Molly Desotell in the mile (eighth, 5:02.73); and Olivia Keller in the triple jump (eighth, 38-3 1-4). Desotell took second place in the 3,000 meters for eight team points with a 9:46.27 time.


Last Week

This past weekend at the Joe Sweeney Invitational, Brett Ringer took first in the 400 dash with a time of 47.85; Sam Duffing won the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.72, and took second in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.08; and Max Gifford (1:52.22), John Morrison (1:52.40), and Cameron Heppner (1:53.10) went 1-2-3 in the 800. Lastly, Eric Douville took second in both the 100 and 200 with times of 10.72 and 21.63, respectively.  

The Tommie Women's team was picked to finish sixth in the Summit League this season. Along with the men, the women are expected to bring with the top 10 to 15 runners in the Summit League top 25.  

Impressive finishes for the Toms this past weekend included a sweep by Alexis Pratt in the 100 and 200 with times of 12.16 and 24.73 (also a career best), Cassia Cady took first in the long jump (18' 2.5) and third in the 100 with a time of 12.37, Hailey Shimon took first in the discus (143' 4) and second in the hammer (145' 0), Anna Swanson and Brianna Schoenrock placed 1-2 in the javelin with throws of 136' 9" and 124' 6, and Hailey Hindt won the 400m hurdles with a time of 1:02.73. Lastly, Katie Nollette, Olivia Passeri, and Rachel Brockish took 1-2-3 in the pole vault.  

Overall, there were 37 top-three finishes, which included 10 first-place finishes.
