The Tommies drop two close games to defending Summit League champion Jackrabbits

St. Paul, Minn. – St. Thomas Softball opened their twelve-game home schedule with two losses to the defending Summit League champions, South Dakota State by scores of 2-0 and 4-1.
Game One Recap
The Tommies played their tightest game of all time with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits losing in a close two-run game to kick of the doubleheader. The Jackrabbits outscored the Tommies 25-1 in the first three meetings between the programs last season.
This time around Ella Cook and the Tommies' defense held South Dakota State scoreless through the opening four innings of play, but not without drama.
Cook allowed baserunners every inning but stranded five runners on base between her four-inning outing. All told, Cook pitched four scoreless frames and allowed four hits, walked three, and struck out four in her first start in over a month.
She was relieved in the fifth inning by Grace Bennett. Bennett was tagged with the loss after giving up two earned runs on three hits in the fifth. She finished the game strong and kept her team in it until the end retiring the next two innings without allowing another run.
Offensively, the Tommies were stymied by the one-time Summit League Pitcher of the Year, Tori Kniesche. Kniesche went the distance, allowed two hits, walked six, and struck out ten enroute to her 11th win of the season.
Avery Wukawitz was the only Tommie to record a base hit, she did so twice, each time via a single. The freshman leadoff hitter also walked and stole two bases.
The other Tommies to draw walks were Katie Goelz, Grace Bennett, Maddie Grad, and Abbi Stierlen who walked twice.
Game Two Recap
St. Thomas struck in the first inning of game two to give them their first lead against South Dakota State in their short Division I program history, but the Jackrabbits tallied four unanswered to down the Tommies 4-1 and complete the doubleheader sweep.
Avery Wukawitz got on base for the fourth time between the two games by walking to lead off the bottom of the first inning. She stole second, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a wild play that began with a Brooke Ellestad single.
Ellestad placed a swinging bunt directly between the pitcher and catcher and by the time the catcher had gathered the ball she was already safe at first base.
Before the pitcher was back into the circle with the ball, Ellestad broke for second base to try and take advantage of the defense. The throw went to second and Brooke was caught in a rundown. Wukawitz displayed heads up baserunning by sprinting home, she beat the throw with a perfect headfirst slide and Ellestad was safe at second on the play.
That is the only run, and the only hit that the Tommies would tally the rest of the way.
Isabelle True pitched valiantly to keep her team close. She went all seven innings, allowed four earned runs, nine hits, walked three and struck out three.
