Billikens make extra-inning comeback to down Tommies in doubleheader

St. Louis, Mo. -- St. Thomas Baseball dropped the opening doubleheader of a three-game series Saturday at Saint Louis in St. Louis, Mo. The Tommies fell in game one, 4-1, before an extra-inning defeat, 6-5, at the Billiken Sports Center.
Game One – L, 4-1
Walker Retz had an exceptional second start to his season after throwing 5.0 innings with just three hits and three walks allowed, tossing five strikeouts to open the series. He didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the fourth inning and left five SLU baserunners stranded during his outing.
Saint Louis struck first in the bottom of the sixth inning as a leadoff single set up a two-out run that scored on a St. Thomas error. The first two Tommie batters of the seventh inning reached base. To set up a sac fly from Parker Mathieson to tie the game, 1-1.
The Billikens scored their final three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning as four straight hits drove in three runs, including an RBI single and two-RBI single to set up the final score, 4-1.
Matthew Enck went 2-of-3 from the plate to lead the Tommies while Max Moris scored the lone run, going 1-of-1 on a pinch-hit at-bat. In total, St. Thomas left four runners on base through the game compared to nine for Saint Louis.
Game Two – L, 6-5 (13)
Enck came up with a bases loaded RBI single to get the Tommies across home first in game two, driving in Charlie Bartholomew for a quick 1-0 lead. Following his six-game hitting streak being snapped in game one, Brigs Richartz led off the fifth inning with a single up the middle to set up an RBI by Joe Vos. Bartholomew followed on the next at-bat to put the ball in play, allowing Ben Vujovich to score on a SLU error to extend the lead to 3-0.
Kolby Gartner made his third start of the season, this time going 7.2 innings with seven hits and one walk allowed with three strikeouts. He also allowed three earned runs, two of which came in the bottom of the fifth inning. SLU reached base with its first two batters of the inning, following with an RBI ground out and an RBI single to cut the Tommies lead to one, 3-2.
Saint Louis tied the game with a leadoff home run in the eighth inning that would eventually force extra innings. The Tommies left one runner on base in each of the 10th, 11th and 12th innings before taking the lead in the 13th. Joe Roder led off the 13th with a double before a ground out advanced him and an RBI single by Enck gave St. Thomas the lead. Dylan O'Connell came up two batters later with an RBI single to extend the lead, 5-3, before being picked off to end the top half.
The Billikens put its first three batters on base in the home half of the 13th to set up a game-tying, two-RBI single with no outs. Two St. Thomas errors ensued while a bases loaded, hit by pitch ended the game.
Enck finished with another two-hit game, this time going 2-of-4 with two RBI, two walks and one run scored. Roder went 3-of-5 with one walk while Moris and Vujovich each recorded two hits. St. Thomas left 12 runners stranded on base.
