St. Paul, Minn. -- Tommie Men's Track and Field is in a four-week break from competition and is training for its 2023 outdoor season. The first outdoor competition for the Purple comes March 30-31 and April 1 with some athletes competing in Texas and some others in the Twin Cities for a nearby meet at Hamline.

In a preseason poll of head coaches, St. Thomas Coach Pete Wareham's team has been predicted for a tie for fourth place out of eight teams at the May 11-13 Summit League Outdoor Championships. Indoor team champ South Dakota was picked first followed by North Dakota State and South Dakota State at Nos. 2-3, with St. Thomas and North Dakota tied for fourth place.

Tommie sophomore multi-event athlete Sam May was named one of the Summit League Men's Athletes to Watch. May and sophomore teammate Jack Rosner finished 1-2 in the heptathlon indoors and combined to score 20 team points to lead St. Thomas to a fourth-place team showing.

May had career bests in all seven events indoors and broke the St. Thomas program record for the heptathlon with a score of 5,189. His bests include high jump (6-6 3-4), pole vault (14-3 1-2), shot put (41-5 3-4), 60 hurdles (8.47), long jump (22-8 1-2) and 60 dash (6.99). As a freshman last year, May took seventh placed in the 2022 conference indoor meet in the heptathlon, and placed eighth in Summit decathlon last May at 2022 outdoor meet.

A three-time All-Summit League honoree, Rosner was the Summit indoor heptathlon runner-up again after a second place in the event in 2022. He scored a personal-best score of 5,171. He has career bests in the long jump (22-1 1-4), pole vault (14-7 1-4), 60 hurdles (8.18), 110 hurdles (14.95) and 60 dash (7.05), 400 dash (49.85), 400 hurdles (54.32) and 100 dash (11.15). He placed third in Summit decathlon last May at the 2022 outdoor meet.

The Toms also return last year's conference outdoor decathlon champ Nate Raddatz, who placed sixth at the 2023 indoor heptathlon with a career-best 4947 points. This indoor season Raddatz had career bests in the pole vault (13-3 3-4), 60 hurdles (8.45), 60 dash (7.25) and high jump (6-2). Last outdoor season he had career bests in the long jump (23-6 1-4), javelin (175-1), discus (133-0) and 110 hurdles (15.55).
