Weekend Recap - Softball takes three of five at Mardi Gras Mambo

Youngsville, La. – St. Thomas softball took three of five for the first time in program history over the weekend against stiff competition at the Mardi Gras Mambo in Louisiana.
Game one vs. Northwestern State
Despite a three-run third inning, the St. Thomas softball team could not sustain its lead against Northwestern State, falling 5-2 Friday at the Mardi Gras Mambo.
After a hitless first two innings, Kiera Murphy and Maddie Grad singled for the Tommies followed by a huge RBI double to right field by Avery Wukawitz. Kaitlyn Raymond scored Grad and Wukawitz with a hard single down the right field line to keep the momentum flowing in the third frame.
Murphy allowed seven hits, six walks and collected four strikeouts. However, she allowed just two of those hits in the first four innings before the Demons caught up to her speed and movement in the fifth and sixth.
Murphy walked one batter before the Demons singled three times consecutively, pushing in a run and subsequently loading the bases. However, two batters later, a throwing error by the Tommies allowed two unearned runs to score, tying the game 3-3.
The Demons' offensive momentum did not stop there, however, as they posted another two runs in the sixth to push the game out of reach for the Tommies, who only managed five hits on the day–all of which came in the third inning.
A bases-loaded walk by Murphy in the fourth with no outs gave the Demons the lead before Grace Bennett replaced Murphy for the remainder of the game. Bennett gave up one hit, one run (earned by Murphy) and struck out one batter.
The Tommies struck out 12 times in the game (four times looking), which is the most they have struck out in a game through their six games thus far.
Despite struggling at the plate, the Tommies committed just two errors and its young roster showed much promise in gaining the repetitions it needs before Summit League play.
Game two vs. Nicholls
Although the Nicholls Colonels scored one run in the bottom of the eighth inning, Grace Bennett's RBI double gave the Tommies a two-run lead in the top of the inning to secure the St. Thomas softball team's 4-3 win Friday.
Bennett collected two of the Tommies' seven hits in the game. Coryn Jacobson also had a two-hit and one-RBI outing.
The Tommies got on the board early with one run in the second thanks to Jacobson's single up the middle to drive in Ella Cook. The Tommies took a 2-0 lead in the third as Brooke Ellestad's double drove in Kaitlyn Raymond.
Cook held the Colonels scoreless through the first four innings before giving up a bases-loaded single up the middle, which drove in two runs to tie the score at 2-2. Isabelle True replaced Cook one batter later.
True allowed one run (unearned), no hits and collected two strikeouts as the Tommies managed to quell the Colonels' possible eighth-inning effort to tack on more runs.
Game three vs. Louisiana Tech
Brooke Ellestad's first-inning home run set the tone for the St. Thomas softball team Saturday as the Tommies defeated Louisiana Tech 3-0 during the second day of the Mardi Gras Mambo.
Pitchers Isabelle True (five innings) and Ella Cook (two innings) combined for just three hits and two walks. However, the pitchers only struck out one batter and it was the Tommies' defense that played an instrumental role in the win.
The Tommies have slightly struggled with errors this season so far, accumulating 23 over their first 10 games and picking up three more against Louisiana Tech. However, besides those few miscues, the pitchers and defense were able to work out of jams and keep the Bulldogs off the bases frequently, never only letting runners reach scoring position a handful of times.
The Tommies themselves also did not reach scoring position often in the game, even going four consecutive innings without reaching base. However, the Purple added two security runs in the sixth to add to their lead and quell any sort of Bulldog comeback.
Game four vs. Southeastern Louisiana
The St. Thomas softball team was run-ruled for the first time this season Sunday against the undefeated Southeastern Louisiana Lions, who defeated the Tommies 10-2 in six innings.
The game marked the second times the two teams have met since the Tommies' move to Division I. The Lions lead the series 2-0, winning their first meeting 8-0 over the Tommies on Feb. 27, 2022.
Three different Tommies took the mound in the game, including Kiera Murphy (five innings), Morgan Klein (0.1 innings) and Ella Cook (0.0 innings).
Murphy gave up eight hits, five runs (all earned), walked four and struck out two before being replaced by Klein in the sixth inning. Klein quickly gave up two singles, a double and two triples for four runs before being replaced by Cook. With the Lions leading 9-2 with a runner on third, Cook did not stand a chance as Southeastern Louisiana scored on a wild pitch to end the game.
The Tommies' only runs came in the third inning after a triple by Maddie Grad scored Kameron Monson. A single by Kaitlyn Raymond to score Grad rounded out the scoring for the Tommies.
Game five vs. Houston Christian
The St. Thomas softball team defeated Houston Christian 4-3 in the final game of the Mardis Gras Mambo Sunday as Isabelle True picked up her fourth win in the circle this season.
All seven of the runs scored in the game were tallied in the sixth inning. True is currently 4-0 in games pitched and finished the game on Sunday with four hits and no walks.
The Tommies were held hitless through the first three frames before a single to left field broke the no-hitter in the fourth inning. Although Raymond made it into scoring position, her teammates could not drive her in as the Tommies hitting doubt continued once again.
However, the Tommies came into the sixth ready to score as Raymond tallied her second single of the day to lead off the inning. Coryn Jacobson drove in Raymond three batters later. Ella Cook also batted in two Tommies with a right field single before a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch of Avery Wukawitz scored Cook to bring the Tommies' total to four for the inning.
The Huskies responded quickly, however, in their next at-bat, but Cook came in for the save after replacing True with no outs and two runners on. The Huskies managed three runs on Cook (two attributed to True) before a popup to first base sealed the win.
