Tommies comeback falls short in 10-4 series finale loss to Roadrunners

2/19/2023 7:00:00 PM | Baseball

Bakersfield, Calif. -- Early miscues set up a comeback attempt that fell short for St. Thomas Baseball during a 10-4 loss at CSU Bakersfield. The Tommies (1-3) cut its deficit to three runs in the eighth inning before the Roadrunners took the series win at Hardt Field.

CSU Bakersfield struck first in the bottom of the second inning behind five baserunners, including four hits and one hit by pitch, for a 4-0 lead. The first and fourth runs crossed on balks sandwiched around two RBI singles.

The Tommies' first hits came in the top of the fourth inning, led off by a single by Brigs Richartz. He later came home on a sac fly on Ben Vujovich's fifth RBI of the series. Following a single during the next at-bat, a base-running miscue led to a fly out double play to end the top half.

The comeback attempt gained traction in the top of the eighth inning as the first four batters reached base. Following a leadoff single by Tommy Golbranson, Tanner Marsh doubled to right center field to drive in the runner. Jonah Hoeg singled during the next at-bat to bring in Marsh. The final Tommie run scored on a Roadrunners balk to cut the deficit to three, 7-4.

CSUB extended its lead back to six behind two hits and a St. Thomas throwing error in the bottom of the eighth.

The Tommies left five runners on base and stranded 11 Roadrunners. The St. Thomas pitching staff accounted for 12 strikeouts, led by starter Walker Retz (0-1) with five in 3.1 innings. Owen Marsh threw 2.2 innings with four strikeouts while Nolan Kemp, Max Skilbeck and Tucker Huhn each accounted for one.

St. Thomas returns to California for a four-game series Feb. 24-26 at Sacramento State.
