Sacramento, Calif. -- St. Thomas Baseball was handed losses of 2-0 and 10-1 Saturday to open a three-game series at Sacramento State at John Smith Field. Kolby Gartner threw a complete game in the opener while the Tommies (1-5) faced an early deficit in game two.

Game One – L, 2-0
For the third time this season, Brigs Richartz led off the game with a hit, his first double of the season, before being stranded on base to end the first inning.

The Tommies put on another baserunner in the second inning but didn't reach base again until the sixth. Max Moris drew a walk with two outs in the top of the sixth inning and Sam Kulesa singled with one out in the eighth for the final Tommie base runner.

Kolby Gartner (0-2) threw a complete game of 8.0 innings and allowed just five baserunners. He left three Hornets stranded through the game, all coming within the first two innings. A lead-off single by SSU in the fifth inning set up an unearned run that moved to second on a balk, third on a ground out, and scored on a passed ball. The final Hornet run crossed on a lead-off home run in the sixth inning.

Gartner recorded his third career complete game along with four strikeouts, four hits, one walk and one earned run allowed.

Game Two – L, 10-1
Sacramento State led off game two with a double down the left field line before scoring on the next at-bat, an RBI double again down the left field line. A wild pitch moved the runner to third while an RBI single gave SSU a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

Ben Vujovich recorded the first Tommie hit of the game, a single up the middle in the top of the second inning, before a double play ended the top half. The Hornets put on its first four batters in the bottom of the second inning, including a three-run home run to extend the lead to 5-0.

Joe Vos led off the top of the third inning with a solo home run, the Tommies' first home run of the season and the first of Vos' career. The Tommies threatened with back-to-back singles with one out in the top of the sixth inning, but a strikeout and fly out ended the visitor half.

The Hornets came back in the bottom of the sixth to add four runs on three hits, including a lead-off triple that crossed on a wild pitch. A two-out, two-RBI single and RBI single gave SSU a 9-1 lead.

The Tommies came back to lead off the seventh inning with a single and a walk before leading off the eighth with a walk and a one-out single. St. Thomas left two runners on in the seventh while a double play kept one stranded in the eighth.

The final Sacramento State run crossed in the bottom of the eighth inning as three walks set up a sac fly.

The Tommies left six runners stranded while the pitching staff kept 12 Hornets baserunners stranded through the game.

Four pitchers combined to finish the game for St. Thomas as the staff combined to throw 12 strikeouts and allowed nine hits and 12 walks.
