2/18/2023 6:50:00 PM | Women's Basketball
Macomb, Ill. -- Two 20-point performances and a first quarter blitz guided St. Thomas Women's Basketball to a 71-57 win at Western Illinois on Saturday afternoon. The Tommies (11-15, 6-10 Summit) jumped out to a 20-7 lead and won the rebound margin, 40-24, for its third straight win.
Sophomore Jade Hill and senior Maggie Negaard combined for 41 points on 65.4 percent shooting. Hill scored 14 points in the first half while Negaard added 12 in the second half.
The Tommies shot 52.7 percent from the floor, topping last week's conference-season high of 52.3 percent. The Purple also knocked down 11 3-pointers for its first instance in double figures since the first win over Oral Roberts on Jan. 14.
Hill's first basket of the game, one of three 3-pointers, gave the Tommies a 7-5 lead nearly three minutes into play. The score jumpstarted a 16-2 run for St. Thomas, which included seven points from Hill, to take a 20-7 lead with 3:15 in the quarter.
Hill took a steal back for a layup midway through the second quarter to extend the lead to 15 points, 35-20. Negaard opened the second half with a 3-pointer to begin St. Thomas' push for a game-high 22-point lead, 62-40, to close out the third quarter.
St. Thomas will go for its first four-game winning streak in the NCAA Division I era as it closes out the regular season Feb. 23 versus North Dakota State and Feb. 25 against North Dakota in St. Paul.
