Gartner tosses eight strikeouts as Tommies fall in opener, 3-0

2/17/2023 11:34:00 PM | Baseball

Bakersfield, Calif. -- Junior Kolby Gartner tossed eight strikeouts in 5.1 innings Friday night as St. Thomas Baseball fell to CSU Bakersfield, 3-0, at Hardt Field.

Gartner (0-1) totaled seven strikeouts through the first four innings, as he allowed just two baserunners through five innings. The Roadrunners put its first two batters on base to start the sixth inning before scoring the game's first run on an RBI single two batters later. Following a pitching change and a stolen base, CSUB added the final runs during the next at-bat with a two-RBI single.

Brigs Richartz led off the game with a single to center field on the first pitch before a single from Ben Vujovich put runners on first and second. The Tommies put one runner on base in the third inning and led off the fourth with a single by Max Moris. Sam Kulesa recorded the lone extra-base hit for St. Thomas with a one-out double in the seventh inning.

Richartz finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate while Kulesa, Moris, and Vujovich each went 1-for-4. Dylan O'Connell drew a walk and was one of six Tommie runners left stranded on base.

Nolan Kemp threw 1.2 innings in relief with two strikeouts while Jeremy Klick threw the eighth inning, striking out the side.

St. Thomas returns to Hardt Field Saturday to play the second and third games of the series. First pitch of game two is scheduled for 3 p.m. Central.
