Tommies score six unanswered, securing first win of the season, downing Creighton 6-4

2/12/2023 10:59:00 PM | Softball

Rosemont, Ill. – St. Thomas Softball scored six unanswered runs in a comeback effort against the Creighton Bluejays for their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon in their final game of the DePaul Dome Tournament.

The Tommies' comeback effort was forged primarily by senior Katie Goelz. Twice Goelz went up with multiple runners on and both times she pulled through. On each occasion she brought home Avery Wukawitz and Brooke Ellestad, first in the third with a single, and second with a double off the wall in the sixth.

The Tommies' starter Isabelle True locked things down after a rough first inning in which she allowed three Creighton runs to cross on two hits and one error. After the opening frame the hurler allowed just one more run and five hits, at one point retiring ten straight batters, as she worked into the seventh inning.

One of those five hits was a double with no outs and a runner on in the top of the final inning. Head Coach, Jen Bagley-Trotter made her only call to the bullpen that thrust freshman Keira Murphy into a possible game breaking (or saving) spot. Murphy diced through the three batters she faced as she induced weak contact and stranded both runners in scoring position. She was awarded a save for her high-wire act.

Brooke Ellestad and Mack Rudy each tallied an RBI to bolster the Tommies' offense. The Toms' top four in the order batted 7-12 with five RBI and two walks. Wukawitz, Ellestad, and Goelz each finished the day with two hits. Ellestad stole two bases to go along with her success at the plate.

St. Thomas made one error on defense but cleaned things up after the first frame. Katie Goelz recorded 10 putouts at first base and Sydney Mickett accounted for seven assists and two putouts, each without recording an error.

Quoting Coach Bagley-Trotter
"We really had a rough time the first four games of the tournament putting everything together. We had solid pitching performances all weekend, we had just struggled defensively to back it up. This is the first game that we were able to back up defensively in the latter innings to help our pitchers. In the end, our hitting came alive and that was really fun to see."

That's a Fact
  • Today's win over Creighton was the Tommies' first win (in four games) against a team from the Big East.
  • Keira Murphy's save was the first of her career. She is just the third Tommie pitcher in the DI era to record a save (Christina Crawford and Isabelle True).
  • Katie Goelz has already racked up seven RBI in five games this season, the senior first basemen tallied nine RBI all last season. She is also just the fourth Tommie to bring home at least four RBI in a single game.
  • Sydney Mickett became just the second Tommie in the DI era to record seven fielding assists in a single game (Brooke Ellestad vs. Ohio State 2022).
  • Brooke Ellestad stole two bases in today's game. She is just the third Tommie in the DI era to do so (Katie Goelz, two times and Kaitlyn Raymond vs. Green Bay 2022).
  • The Tommies hit just three triples all season in 2022. Katie Goelz hit two triples in a single game on Friday against Eastern Kentucky.

What's up Next?
The Tommies head down to Lafayette, Louisiana for the Mardi Gras Mambo for five games beginning on Friday, February 17th. This will be the program's second trip to the Mardi Gras Mambo, last season they lost each of their five games.
