Track & Field opens indoor season Friday at M City Classic

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The St. Thomas men's and women's track & field programs officially begin the 2023-24 indoor season Dec. 8-9 at the M City Indoor Classic, hosted by the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.

The first starting gun will fire at 10:30 a.m. Friday with the men's heptathlon, followed by the women's pentathlon at 10:45 a.m. Field events begin at 2 p.m. with running events starting at 3 p.m. Saturday will consist of the final three events of the men's heptathlon, starting at 11 a.m.

Both programs found success at the M City Indoor Classic to begin the 2022-23 season as the men totaled 14 top-four finishes, including a sweep of the top five spots in the 800-meter run, and the women added 10 top-five finishes.

Nate Raddatz (Sr., Multis) and Mitchell Piehl (So., Sprints) were announced as the St. Thomas Indoor Track & Field Preseason Athletes to Watch while Taynian Walgrave (Sr., Sprints/Hurdles) and Alexis Pratt (So., Sprints) earned the distinctions for the women's team.

Ashley Lucas enters her second season leading the women's program while Pete Wareham begins his 31st season as head coach for the men's program. Lucas led the Tommies to fifth place finishes at both the indoor and outdoor Summit League Championships last season, led by all-conference honoree Molly Desotell (Jr., Distance) while Wareham led the Purple to fourth place finishes, including an indoor conference title by Sam May (Jr., Multis).
