12/30/2023 7:05:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Catamounts continued their success against the Tommies with three goals in the first eight minutes of the first period, ultimately winning 4-1 in regulation.
BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of Vermont Catamounts (9-7-1, 3-4-1 Hockey East) delivered the St. Thomas Tommies (9-10-1, 7-5-0 CCHA) a second consecutive non-conference loss with three quick strikes in the first period. Vermont came away with a 4-1 victory Saturday night at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
RECAP
Vermont capitalized on a defensive zone turnover and rather fortunate bounce with a score just 26 seconds into the contest. Jake Sibell, who entered the game leading the country in both save percentage and goals against average, made four saves before the Catamounts scored at 5:12 to double their lead. A power play two minutes later opened the door for a third goal in just seven minutes and 13 seconds.
The Toms found themselves in a deep hole and could not bring the game any closer through the first forty minutes despite four power play opportunities. Vermont tallied one more goal in the second period.
St. Thomas' only goal was scored by Luc Laylin in the final frame with 15 minutes remaining. Matthew Gleason and Cooper Gay assisted on what was Laylin's fourth goal of the season.
The Tommies outshot Vermont 31 to 25 but could not solve the goaltender who made 30 saves enroute to the Catamounts fifth straight victory.
UP NEXT
The Tommies will host the Bulldogs of Minnesota Duluth for an exhibition game next Saturday, January 6 at 4:07 p.m. They return to CCHA play January 11 and 13 to play the Michigan Tech Huskies at home.
