Vermont too much to handle for Men’s Hockey

12/29/2023 9:21:00 PM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies and Catamounts faced off for the first time ever and Vermont came out on top with a well-balanced offensive attack.

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (9-9-1, 7-5-0 CCHA) could not keep up with the Catamounts of Vermont (8-7-1, 3-4-1 Hockey East) who unloaded five goals on the Toms' defense in a 5-1 victory in front of the home crowd at Gutterson Fieldhouse on Friday night.

RECAP
The Tommies and Catamounts had never matched up in a contest before this Friday night. Vermont got out in front late in the first period and never looked back.

The home side added another goal quickly into the second period. It took the Tommies' Ryan O'Neill 15 minutes to answer with a goal from a sharp angle off the back of the goaltender and in. What momentum the Purple gained from the goal was quickly zapped just 28 seconds later when Dawson Good restored Vermont's two-goal lead.

Vermont added a fourth goal on an empty net at 16:36 in the third and the Catamounts tallied one more at 18:39 to finish off St. Thomas, 5-1.

The Tommies were outshot 32 to 29 and outdrawn on the dot 31 to 22.

UP NEXT
The Tommies finish their short road trip in Vermont tomorrow at 4 p.m. central standard time for their final true non-conference game of the season.
