Offensive onslaught from Men's Hockey leads to 7-1 victory over Ferris State

12/2/2023 9:13:00 PM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies’ six-goal margin is the largest of the Division I era, with goals from five different players, Mack Byers tallied the first hat trick in program history.

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (8-7-1, 6-4-0 CCHA) showcased its best offensive outburst in the short DI history of the program with seven goals against the Bulldogs of Ferris State (5-8-1, 3-5-0), on the road Saturday night.

RECAP
The offense came early and often for the Tommies in the first period. First out of the blocks for the Purple was Quinton Pepper at 1:03 from Matthew Gleason. The goal was Pepper's third in five games and Gleason's helper was the second of the series and ninth of the season.

Mack Byers then added a goal of his own on a rebounded puck from Lucas Wahlin at 3:31. Early production from the Toms' top line of Ryan O'Neill, Mack Byers and Lucas Wahlin who finished the game with five goals and 13 points between them.

Two thirds of that line combined for the Tommies' third goal of the first period at 12:46. Ryan O'Neill displayed another highlight reel toe drag play on the break before putting the puck past the goaltender on a backhanded shot. A pair of breakout passes from Cole Miller and Mack Byers opened the door for the sophomore on his fourth goal of the season.

St. Thomas opened the second period with a power play goal from Luke Manning at 1:05 from Jake Braccini and Ethan Gauer. It was the first of three power play goals for the Toms who entered the weekend with just six power play goals and exited with 11 on the season. The goal was Manning's 50th point of his DI career, the fifth year senior tallied 12 points at the Air Force Academy and is one of the top point scorers in Tommie DI history with 38.

Ferris State's lone goal came just over two minutes later. It was the only time the Bulldogs could beat Jacob Sibell who made 33 saves on 34 shots to lower his CCHA leading goals against average to 1.75 and raised his conference leading save percentage to .936.

St. Thomas' captain Lucas Wahlin scored on the power play at 5:49 from Ryan O'Neill and Grant Docter and then Mack Byers scored for the second time with a power play tally from Wahlin and O'Neill at 11:58. The second period ended with a 6-1 Tommie lead.

Byers scored at 4:44 in the third to secure his spot in the Tommie history books as the first hat trick scorer of the DI era. Ryan O'Neill assisted on the goal for his fifth point of the game, and Lucas Wahlin added a helper for his fourth point of the contest.

The only other time the Tommies had scored seven goals in a game was against Ferris State last season in a 7-4 win. St. Thomas scored three power play goals for the first time this season and went 3-6 while the penalty kill was a perfect 4-4. Both teams finished with 34 shots on goal and the Tommies won 36 of 67 faceoffs.

UP NEXT
