Tommies hang tough with Power 5 Badgers

12/13/2023 10:15:00 PM | Women's Basketball

ST. PAUL, Minn. - The University of St. Thomas women's basketball has hosted some tough opponents at home in 2023-24. That trend certainly did not change Wednesday night, as the Tommies faced the Power 5 Wisconsin Badgers in Schoenecker Arena. Despite a gutsy performance by St. Thomas, the Badgers were able to pull out the 78-55 road win amid strong performances from Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River), Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) and Jade Hll (Minneapolis, Minn. / South). The trio once again scored in double-digits, but it was not enough to lead the Tommies to victory, as they fell to 5-6 on the season.

RECAP
Langbehn and the Tommies were hot to start the game, as they consistently traded leads with Wisconsin in the opening 10 minutes of play. Baskets by Langbehn and Jordyn Glynn (Grand Meadow, Minn. / Grand Meadow) gave St. Thomas and early 12-10 advantage, but the Badgers had the last word at the end of the quarter. Wisconsin used size and physicality to bully St. Thomas under the basket and outscore the host Tommies 11-4 in the closing minutes of the first, resulting in a 21-16 first quarter lead for the Badgers.

St. Thomas was certainly still within striking distance after the first, and Scalia opened the second with a three-pointer to pull the Tommies within two at 21-19. Unfortunately, that was the only basket St. Thomas would score for several minutes, as Wisconsin continued to extend its lead with stingy defense and tough shooting. In fact, the Badgers outscored the Tommies 10-3 in the opening three minutes of the second quarter, eventually pulling ahead 36-19. However, St. Thomas found some life late in the quarter and chipped away at what seemed like a dominant lead for Wisconsin. A free throw from Hill ended the Tommies scoring drought before Scalia and Emma Miner (Grimes, Iowa / Dallas Center-Grimes) whittled the lead to a seemingly manageable 11 points. The Badgers, though, would have the last word yet again, as they scored one last basket in the final minute of the half to make it 42-29 Wisconsin after two quarters of play.

St. Thomas made things interesting at the start of the third quarter. Scalia went on a 5-0 run by herself, cutting the Badgers lead to 42-38 and sparking life back into the Tommie offense. Unnfortunately, as it had all night, inconsistency both with scoring a rebounding plaqued St. Thomas in the second half. Every time the Tommies looked to make a run, Wisconsin would come up with a second chance rebound, stealing all the momentum St. Thomas stole for itself. Still, there were glimpses of dominance from the Tommies. Baskets from Hill and Langbehn kept St. Thomas within striking distance, but the Badgers would once again go on a late scoring run, allowing the visitors to hold a 57-42 lead after 30 minutes of play.

After the third, St. Thomas was simply unable to make up the 15 point deficit nor stop Wisconsin from scoring. The Badgers went on a 9-0 run to start the fourth quarter, seemingly putting the nail in the coffin for the Tommies. Still, the St. Thomas bench put up some good numbers in the fourth quarter, as Phoebe Frentzel (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) and Jordyn Lamker (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) got in on the scoring action. It wasn't enough, sadly, to lead the Tommies to victory, as they fell by a final score of 78-55.

TOP TOMMIES
  • Junior Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) shot .700 from the floor en route to a 14 point performance for St. Thomas. She would also tally a team-leading four rebounds in the loss.
  • Junior Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) added 13 points, going 5-6 from the free throw line, with three assists and two steals.
  • Sophomore Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) went 3-5 from the beyond the arc in her 13 point performance, while Angelina Hammond (Hopkins, Minn. / Hopkins) led the team with three steals.
