Tommies flummox Pointers in Saturday victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas women's basketball was able to get back on track and ready for Summit League play Saturday afternoon. The Tommies hosted the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Pointers in Schoenecker Arena and claimed the victory 82 – 49 over the visitin Pointers. St. Thomas led the entire game with a strong performance by Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River), who was a perfect 6-6 from the field and lead the Tommies in scoring with 19 points. Sammy Opichka (Green Bay, Wis. / Green Bay) and Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) were the other leading scorers for the Tommies with 10 points each. The win brings St. Thomas back to a .500 winning percentage on the season with a 6-6 record going into conference play.

Langbehn started the game hot for the Tommies, scoring their first seven of nine points thanks to her teammates feeding her in the post. A few jumpers by Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater) pushed the St. Thomas lead to 11-2 within the first five minutes of the game. Langbehn continued to dominate the paint for the rest of the first quarter, as she wound up scoring 13 of the Tommies 21 first quarter points as they would finish the first with a 21-12 lead.
The second quarter started off with St. Thomas making shots behind the arc. Scalia and Jordyn Glynn (Grand Meadow, Minn. / Grand Meadow) would make threes on back-to-back possessions to open the second. Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) would joined the three point scoring barrage as well, extending the Tommies lead to 34-16 lead with 6 minutes remainig in the second. Those performances helped St. Thomas shoot over .500 from the floor in the first half, as the team took a 44-22 lead into the locker room at half.
The Tommies defense continued to put on a clinic at the start of the third. Angelina Hammond (Hopkins, Minn. / Hopkins) started the quarter off strong with two steals in the three minutes, and UW-Stevens Point found itself in foul trouble early and often. The Tommies were sent to the line six times in the third quarter and converted 11 of 12 free throw chances, as they pushed their lead to 65-29 by the end of the third.
The last quarter was a more back and forth between the Tommies and the Pointers, but victory was well in hand for St. Thomas. Feuerbach started off the scoring with a good looking the closing frame. Gabby Johnson (Freedom, Wis. / Freedom) would enter the court for the first time this season and was strong at the boards. Johnson secured four rebounds and recorded her first assist of the season on the final play of the game, finding a cutting Lizzie Steingraber (New London, Wis. / New London) to secure the 82-49 victory over UW-Stevens Point.

Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) would lead the Tommies in both assists and blocks. She would secure six assists on the night and two blocks to go along with her six points.

Sammy Opichka was able to rack up points quickly going 2-2 from the field and 6-6 on the line. She was able to score ten points in only 7:30 minutes of play.

After a short 13 day break over Christmas, the Tommies will begin Summit League play, as they are set to host North Dakota in their first conference game of 2023-24.Tip off is scheduled for 1:00 pm on Friday December 29 in Schoenecker Arena.
