ST. PAUL, MINN. – The University of St. Thomas swim and dive team was busy in its final dual of 2023. The Tommies hosted Summit League foe, the University of Omaha, in their final dual meet before the new year. Though St. Thomas saw nine individuals win events on Saturday, the Tommies were unable to close the calendar year with a win, as Omaha left the pool with two wins. The Maverick women defeated St. Thomas 206-113 while the men won nby a final score of 214-105.

WOMEN'S RESULTS: ST. THOMAS (113) vs. OMAHA (206)
Three individuals won four races for the Tommies Saturday afternoon, including Grace Urkiel (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount). The senior continued to dominate the breaststroke races, earning individual wins in both the 100 and 200 events, and helped St. Thomas' top relay teams to two top-3 finishes on Saturday. In her first event, the 200 medley relay, Urkiel led the Tommies to a second place finish as a team thanks to a time of 1:47.96. That proved to be a good warm up for her premiere events: the 100 and 200 breaststroke races. The senior won the 100 with a time of 1:05.16 before claiming the top spot in the 200 with a time of 2:26.08.

Urkiel also found success in her final event of the afternoon: the 200 freestyle relay. The team of Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake), Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / Lakeville South), Ella Palmquist (Dundas, Minn. / Northfield) and Urkiel clocked a time of 1:39.12 to finish second in the event. Both Palmquist and Urkiel clocked times under 25 seconds, with Urkiel swimming 24.31 on the anchor leg.

Emily Wooden (Chino Hills, Calif. / Ayala) and Maggie Kolb (Afton, Minn. / Hill-Murray) also earned individual wins for the Tommies Saturday afternoon. After strong performances at Chicago last month, Wooden clocked the fastest time in the 200 butterfly, winning the race with a time of 2:11.93. Teammate Kolb would finish third in the race with a time of 2:13.75, setting her up for an individual win in the 100. With a seeded time of 1:03.02, Kolb swam a career best time of 1:00.23, just out touching Wooden at the wall by .4. Wooden ultimately finished in second thanks to her time of 1:00.51.

Several other Tommies found success in the pool Saturday afternoon. In addition to her performance in the 200 freestyle relay, Bonneville was the highest finisher in the 1000 freestyle, earning a top-3 finish thanks to her time of 11:03.22. Sophia Hayes (Naperville, Ill. / Central) continued her domination in freestyle races as well. The first year finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:58.05 and earned an identical finish in the 500 freestyle.
