Tommies return to host Iowa State Wednesday

STOCKTON, CALIF. – It was not always sunny in California for the University of St. Thomas women's basketball team. After seeing their three game winning streak snapped on Friday, the Tommies were hoping to start a new and avoid a two game losing skid on day two of the Turkey Tip-Off Classic in Stockton, California. Unfortunately, a win wasn't in the cards for St. Thomas, as the team fell to Butler University by a final score of 76-54. With the loss, the team is now 3-3 on the season.

RECAP:
Like Friday, things were going well for the Tommies early in the first quarter. Though the team didn't jump out to a 9-0 lead, St. Thomas hung with a high profile Butler team point-for-point and even held a three-point lead early in the game. However, as on Friday, cold shooting spurts plagued the Tommies early in the game, as the Bulldogs went on a 10-3 run to hold a 16-9 advantage over St. Thomas. Additionally, the Tommies defense could not keep Butler's top shooters off the board in the first half. By the end of the opening 20 minutes, three Bulldogs were already in double figures, and the St. Thomas offense simply could not keep up.

There were plenty of positives for the Tommies, though, in the first half of the game, specifically in the form of Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River). The junior forward continued to be St. Thomas' top offensive threat in the paint, and she continued to make baskets when it mattered most for the Tommies. Still, St. Thomas found itself in a 27-16 deficit after one and in a 47-30 hole entering the locker room at half.

Things started to turn the Tommies in the top of the third quarter. St. Thomas slowly but surely chipped away at the Butler lead, using strong, stingy defense to whittle it down to 52-42 midway through the quarter. Unfortunately, the Tommies would only score six points in the closing four minutes, allowing the Bulldogs to hold a 58-46 lead after three quarters of play. Butler would run away with the victory from there, outscoring St. Thomas 18-8 in the fourth and final quarter to win the game by a final score of 76-54.

TOP TOMMIES

  • Jordyn Glynn (Grand Meadow, Minn. / Grand Meadow) was St. Thomas leading scorer on Saturday, tallying a season-high 15 points on 6-9 shooting, and added four rebounds, one assist and two steals in the loss.
  • Jo Langbehn (Elk River, Minn. / Elk River) continued to dominate the paint and was two rebounds shy of a double-double Saturday afternoon. The junior scored 14 points on 7-11 shooting and tallied a team leading eight rebounds in the loss.
  • Jade Hill (Minneapolis, MInn. / South) and Amber Scalia (Stillwater, MInn. / Stillwater) continued their double-digit scoring streak, as both scored over 10 points Saturday afternoon. Hill closed the game with 11 points and three assists, while Scalia added 10 points.
