Cyclones win game 85-44
ST.PAUL, MINN. --- The University St. Thomas women's basketball team returned home to Schoenecker Arena after a week-long road trip and hosted Iowa State University in the first official Power Five home match up in program history. The Tommies were hoping to bounce back from a loss to Butler University in the Turkey Tip-Off Classic but ultimately fell to the Cyclones 85-44 on Wednesday evening.
Shooting woes hindered St. Thomas Wednesday as the Tommies shot a season low 23.7 percent (14-59) from the field and 16 percent (6-38) from three point range compared to the Cyclones, who shot 53.3 percent (32-60) from the floor and 48 percent (11-23) from beyond the arc. St. Thomas was outrebounded by Iowa State 44-31 and converted 15 ISU turnovers into just 14 points.
RECAP:
The Cyclones jumped out of the gate Wednesday evening ready to play, starting the game off with a 7-2 run in the first four minutes. An offensive rebound by Phoebe Frentzel (Hartland, Wis. / Arrowhead) followed by a made jumper by Jade Hill (Minneapolis, Minn. / South) helped the Toms cut the Iowa State lead to three with four minutes left in the quarter. St. Thomas struggled to make shots to end the first quarter, though, as Iowa State went on a 16-2 run to put the Tommies in a 23-6 hole heading into the second quarter.
The Tommies and Cyclones traded baskets for the first five minutes of the second quarter, as Jordyn Glynn (Grand Meadow, Minn. / Grand Meadow) scored St. Thomas' first three-pointer of the game at the eight minute mark. The trio of Glynn, Amber Scalia (Stillwater, Minn. / Stillwater), and Hill scored nine of the Tommies 13 points of the quarter, but St. Thomas still found itself in a 42-19 deficit entering the locker room at halftime.
The Tommies shooting woes continued in the second half, as they found themselves in a 69-29 deficit heading into the final quarter of play. The final quarter started off with back-to-back makes from beyond the arc for Scalia and kickstarted St. Thomas' best scoring quarter of the night. A basket by Jordyn Lamker (Maple Grove, Minn. / Maple Grove) a layup from Fretzel, and a three pointer from Faith Feuerbach (Sycamore, Ill. / Sycamore) highlighted the fourth and helped the Tommies keep pace with the Cyclones hot shooting. It was not enough, though, to overcome the double-digit deficit 85-44.
TOP TOMMIES:
Quotables from Head Coach Ruth Sinn following Wednesday evening's loss against Iowa State:
"We were very excited to bring a power five champion into Schoenecker Arena and Iowa State is a fabulous program that brought forth a great effort forth tonight. They are a very well-coached and disciplined squad and coach (Bill) Fennelly does a great job directing as he looks to grow the entire competition in the state of Iowa."
"Lots to learn from a game like this. Certainly, we can knock down more shots on the offensive side of the ball, but overall, was pleased with the teams' effort and heart tonight. We got a lot of good experience tonight heading into the Summit League conference season and a lot of growth can be gained from this game."
