Slow start sinks Men’s Hockey’s five game win streak
11/25/2023 10:53:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Tommies gave up three goals in the first 11 minutes of their game against Lake Superior State, falling by a score of 3-1.
MENDOTA HEIGHTS, Minn. – It had been over three weeks since the University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team (7-6-1, CCHA 5-3-0) had lost a game, but after a rough first 11 minutes against Lake Superior State (7-7-0, 4-4-0) the Tommies fell by a score of 3-1 on home ice Saturday night.
RECAP
The first place Tommies had been riding high with five straight wins and 15 straight CCHA points, including a win the night before against the Lake State Lakers. The visitors came in ready to rain on the Purple parade and did so with a goal just 43 seconds into the contest.
Ross Roloson, a Minnesota native, shot one from the near-side circle and past St. Thomas netminder Jake Sibell.
In the two minutes that followed, the Tommies and Lakers each put one shot on net. At 2:49 into the first Lake State's third shot on goal of the game got through to the back of the goal. The Lakers had two goals on their first three shots and the Toms were in a deep hole.
A hole that got a bit deeper with the third Laker goal of the period at 11:19. The road team outshot the Toms 19-9 in the first.
Jake Sibell settled into his crease throughout the remainder of the game making stops on all 15 of the shots he faced in the final two frames.
St. Thomas' only goal came halfway through the second period. Ryan O'Neill skated directly across the low slot and patiently waited to find the five-hole of LSSU's goalie. He poked it through the goaltender's pads for his second goal of the series and third of his season. Lucas Wahlin and Grant Docter each assisted on the power play tally.
That second period power play goal was the only time the Toms would convert while up a man in five opportunities. The penalty kill was a perfect 2-2, including a key kill of Lucas Wahlin's five-minute major midway through the third period.
Cooper Gay's seventh goal of the season, after the long penalty kill, was disallowed following a video review due to goaltender interference.
Coach Rico Blasi pulled his goaltender with 4:05 left in regulation and the Toms peppered the Lakers with 10 shots, six of which were placed on goal.
UP NEXT
The Tommies go back on the road for two games in Big Rapids, Michigan against Ferris State (4-7-1, 2-4-0) on Friday Dec. 1 at 6:07 p.m. central and Saturday Dec. 2 at 5:07 p.m. central.
