Late-game heroics give Men's Hockey first win over ranked Huskies

10/7/2023 10:51:00 PM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies scored five goals from five different players including two from transfers Matthew Gleason and Ryder Donovan.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – Thanks to a well-rounded effort up and down the line chart throughout the entirety of the night, and Ryder Donovan's first goal as a Tommie in overtime, plus a 33-save game by goalie Aaron Trotter, Tommie Men's Hockey (1-0-0) came away with the victory against the No. 7/8 ranked St. Cloud State Huskies (0-1-0).

Recap
The game got out to a start familiar in the history of matchups between St. Cloud and St. Thomas at the Herb Brooks Center. The Huskies took advantage of an early power play opportunity and scored under three minutes into the game.

The rest of the contest flipped the script on a series past dominated by the NCHC powerhouse.

At the 4:25 mark, just over two minutes after the opening goal, Jake Braccini picked his spot up over the shoulders of the opposing goaltender to knot the game up at one. Mason Poolman, who watched the first goal of the game from the penalty box, assisted on the Tommie goal for his first collegiate point.

The game would remain scoreless for ten minutes until another penalty came back to bite St. Thomas. Braccini was called for tripping and with 16 seconds left on the power play the Huskies regained the lead, 2-1.

St. Thomas would not score again in the opening frame despite two minutes and 13 seconds on the power play.

Just before the horn blew the game into the first intermission the referees reviewed a play involving St. Cloud's Josh Luedtke and Lucas Wahlin. After minutes of deliberation, St. Cloud was handed a five-minute major for contact to the head.

A period that began with a Tommie power play that lasted over five minutes, including two full minutes of 5-on-3 would not see its first goal until it was nearly half expired. Then at 9:25 Luke Manning won a draw to the left of the Huskies' net and found Cameron Recchi with room in the slot, he did not miss, tie game once again.

St. Cloud's dominant power play would rear its head once more at 11:57, 3-2 Huskies.

On the other hand, the Tommies' power play was 0-5 before putting the pieces together with under a minute left in the second period. Junior transfer Matthew Gleason found Luc Laylin who, in turn, found Luke Manning. He then buried the puck deep to tie the game again. The assist was Gleason's first point in purple. It was Manning's second point of the night.

The third period started much like how the second period ended, with a St. Cloud State penalty. This time the call came in at 3:11 for boarding.

The Tommie power play unit nearly utilized the entirety of the penalty and with three seconds left, Manning found Liam Malmquist, who found Matthew Gleason on a beautiful one-time goal. It took just four minutes for Gleason to tally his second point as a Tommie. Malmquist's assist was his first for St. Thomas and Manning's assist was his third point of the night.

The dramatics were not yet done and again, St. Cloud pumped one home while on the power play at 11:28 to tie the game one last time. Their fourth power play goal was the final tally in regulation.

After a short intermission head coach Rico Blasi sent out another transfer, Noah Prokop to the center dot for a pivotal faceoff. Prokop won possession and the Tommies never gave it back.

Enter, Ryder Donovan

The graduate transfer from Wisconsin who had not played a hockey game in nearly two years bid the nationally ranked Huskies goodnight.

His goal was set up perfectly by fellow transfers Liam Malmquist and James Marooney

"Liam gave me a gift there in the slot so it's my job to put that one away," said Donovan postgame, "once coach told us the line rotations I said to Liam 'alright we worked on this in practice, I just feel like you're going to get it, just find me open and we will see what happens.'"

Donovan and the Tommies celebrated their first win of the season directly in front of a raucous student section in St. Cloud.
