Tommies compete in dual with South Dakota

MEN'S RESULTS: St. Thomas (98) vs. South Dakota (143)
A trio of familiar names found themselves atop the leader board in the Tommies 143-98 loss to the Coyotes on Saturday. Sophomore Ben Linde (Andover, Minn. / Andover) opened the day with a huge victory for St. Thomas, claiming the top spot in the 3-meter diving competition. The sophomore won the event with a six-dive score of 223.05, earning nine quick points towards St. Thomas' overall team score. He finished second in the 1-meter competition behind a six dive and season best score of 253.50.
Alex Foti (Waukesha, Wis. / West) and Philip Jensen (Hastings, Minn. / Hastings) also impressed in the poll for the Tommies. Though he didn't win the event, Foti's swim in the 1650 freestyle was impressive, as he finished second with a time of 16:39.49. Foti would also go on to finish second in the 500 freestyle behind a time of 4:46.73.
Jensen won two individual events in the pool for St. Thomas, claiming the top spot in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly. The sophomore earned first place in the 100 backstroke, his first individual race of the day, behind a time of 50.29 before winning the 100 fly with an eerily similar time. Jensen clocked the fasted time in the even by nearly two full seconds, winning the 100 fly with a time of 50.53.
WOMEN'S RESULTS: St. Thomas (53) vs. South Dakota (189)
Like the men, the Tommie women found success in the distance races on Saturday, as Elizabeth Bonneville (Lakeville, Minn. / South) continued her impressive start to 2023-24. The junior finished second in the 1650 free, closing with a time of 18:41.16 in her season debut in the race. Teammates Madeline Elseth (Grand Forks, N.D. / Central) and Grace Shroer (Gold River, Calif. / Casa Roble) finished third and fourth in the marathon race with times of 19:49.04 and 19:57.05 respectively.
Grace Urkiel (Rosemount, Minn. / Rosemount) just missed out on her seventh individual win of the 2023-24 season. In the 100 breaststroke, the senior was out touched at the wall by South Dakota's Taylor Buhr, finishing second by .01 of a second. Urkiel's time of 1:05.61 helped her finish second in her loan individual race of the day.
Grace Forsberg (Rice Lake, Wis. / Rice Lake) and Libby Fischer (Eagan, Minn. / Visitation) finished second and third in the 50 freestyle, clocking times of 24.87 and 25.16 respectively. Hanna Ryan (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) and Caroline Peterson (Northfield, Minn. / Northfield) earned top-3 finishes in the 400 IM with times of 4:48.47 and 4:50.88.

St. Thomas will head to the University of Minnesota of its first multi-team competition of the 2023-24 season. The Tommies will take on both the Gophers and South Dakota State in a triangular set to take place on Friday, October 27. The meet is set to begin at 5:00 p.m. CT in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
