Men’s Hockey falls in overtime thriller to #2 Minnesota

10/14/2023 12:50:00 AM | Men's Hockey

The Tommies come back from two deficits in a back-and-forth battle with the #2 Minnesota Golden Gophers, ultimately falling 84 seconds into overtime.

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The University of St. Thomas Men's Hockey team took on the #2 Minnesota Golden Gophers for the first time in the modern DI era in front of over 11,000 at the Xcel Energy Center and they put on a show that involved three lead changes, 11 goals, and an overtime period.

Recap
Things got off to a rather somber start for the Tommie faithful in attendance on a brisk Friday night with two first period goals by the visiting Gophers.

In a frame that looked even on the stat sheet (12 shots on goal apiece) the Gophers scored just under eight minutes into the highly hyped spectacle and capitalized on the power play with just 1:36 remaining.

Things seemingly went from bad to worse for the Tommies when sophomore Cooper Gay took a hard charge toward the net and collided with Minnesota netminder Justen Close for a two-minute minor penalty at the beginning of the second.

The Gophers, already with a two-goal lead, looked to add another on the power play. Instead, it was St. Thomas who turned a quick defensive deflection into offense on the other end. Lucas Wahlin found Mack Byers on an odd man rush and the Tommies' leading scorer from a season ago launched it into the back of the net for the first time on the year.

The Toms would kill off another penalty and then sustain pressure in the offensive end, firing off four shots in a one-and-a-half-minute period. The pressure was ultimately too much for Minnesota at 9:38 when Jake Ratzlaff fired a shot that ricocheted off Liam Malmquist's skate for the equalizing goal.

St. Thomas would then take the lead at 17:25 with some picture-perfect passing between Malmquist, Matthew Gleason, and Luke Manning who sent the puck home.

After a three-goal second period against the national runners-up from a year ago, Lucas Wahlin scored just 27 seconds into the third. Ryan O'Neill assisted on the play.

A tripping penalty against the Tom's Matthew Gleason would open the door for the Gophers and 20 seconds after Wahlin's goal they answered right back, 4-3.

Minnesota then added another 81 seconds later, 4-4. Then with their third goal in under five minutes the Gophers had the lead again, 5-4.

A hard-nosed Tommie side would not go away easily and at 13:14 Lucas Wahlin tipped another puck in to tie the game at five. Tobias Abrahamsson rocketed a slap shot that bounced off Mack Byers and then off Wahlin for the freshman's first collegiate point.

For the second time in less than a week the Tommies would take a top-eight nationally ranked opponent into overtime. On this occasion the storybook ending was not meant to be. It took Minnesota 84 seconds and one shot to ice the game away at the X.

Nuggets
The Tommies' struggles on special teams continued by going 0-2 on the power play and killing 2-4 penalties. They did score while shorthanded to start the second period.

The Gophers outshot the Tommies 37-36, that one shot made all the difference in overtime. The Tommies performed well in the circle, winning 39 of 76 draws.
