#2 Minnesota hands Men’s Hockey setback with late-game surge
10/14/2023 10:07:00 PM | Men's Hockey
The Tommies’ transfer goaltender Jacob Sibell stood tall in his debut for the Purple with 22 saves on 24 shots.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Twenty-four hours after one of the most entertaining games in the history of St. Thomas Men's Hockey, the Tommies would be locked into another close battle through over half the game at 3M Arena against the #2 Minnesota Golden Gophers, ultimately falling 3-0 after an empty-net final blow.
Recap
The first period ended with just 12 shots between the two sides. The Tommies' transfer netminder Jacob Sibell stopped all seven shots that he faced in his debut.
St. Thomas' power play unit could not take advantage on two opportunities in the opening frame while placing just one shot on goal in a combined four minutes.
At 3:31 in the second period Cooper Gay was given a two-minute minor penalty for elbowing. The Tommies penalty kill held up during their first appearance on the road.
Eight minutes later, special teams would have to step up again when James Marooney was sent to the box for elbowing.
On the Gophers' second shot of their second power play, Jimmy Snuggerud beat Sibell for the first score of the game at 13:35.
The Tommies had another chance with a man advantage with 2:06 to go but came up empty once again, 1-0 Gophers after two.
St. Thomas could not score on its fourth power play chance a quarter of the way into the final period. One minute after their final power play concluded, Jimmy Snuggerud found the back of the net for the fourth time in two games.
The Gophers added on more goal on an empty net with 43 ticks left on the clock.

Head Coach Rico Blasi on his team's game two effort
"I thought we played a good game again tonight. Shots were even and Close (Minnesota goaltender) made some nice saves on point blank chances and so did Sibell. They got a power play goal to go up 1-0 and our assignments were right but just not enough for Snuggerud. He doesn't need many chances to score, and we were pressing in the third and he got a chance two on one, and he buried it. Other than that, we sustained pressure, and it was a back-and-forth affair."
Up Next
The Tommies return home to the Saint Thomas Ice Arena for a two-game series with the Lions of Lindenwood on Friday Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. and Saturday Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.
