Men’s Soccer set to play two Summit League matches

The Tommies are on the road at Omaha on Saturday, before returning home to face Oral Roberts

St. Paul, Minn. --  St. Thomas Men's Soccer (2-6-2) looks to bounce back from two road losses with Summit League matches against the Omaha Mavericks on Saturday, Oct 14th and the Oral Roberts Golden Eagles on Wednesday Oct 18th.
 
The Tommie and Omaha match-up is the third time these two teams have met, with a spilt of the two games so far. In 2021 the Tommies won 1-0 at home to earn their first win in the DI era.

On the Road
The Tommies have played six games on the road so far this season. On the road, the Tommies have an 0-5-1 record, with the 1-1 draw coming from a match at North Florida.
 
Most recently, the Tommies faced Western Illinois and Drake, falling in both games.
 
Western Illinois Recap
Western Illinois started the game off hot in the first half, scoring three goals within 14 minutes of play. The Tommies had one chance to score in the first half, putting one shot on goal. The Leathernecks used their momentum to put five shots on goal during the firsts 45 minutes of the match.
 
The Tommie made a push in the second half, both offensively and defensively. The Tommies got on the board in the 62nd minute from an own goal by the Leathernecks.  In the 61st minute, Charlie Holton had a very strong chance on a breakaway but was denied by the Western Illinois goalkeeper. Soon after, Holton capitalized on his next another opportunity, and with 10 minutes left to play to made it a one goal game.
 
The Western Illinois defense found a way to hold off the Tommies, and ultimately won the game 3-2. The Tommies finished the game with ten shots and four on goal, whereas the Leathernecks had ten shots and 5 on goal.
 
Drake Recap
The Purple defense was tested early, with the Bulldogs launching their first shot in the first minute of the match. Despite Krenc's efforts, Drake's relentless offensive pressure resulted in the Bulldogs breaking through with a goal at 9:58.

Midway through the first half, Drake managed to double their lead. Although Drake continued to apply pressure through the rest of the first half, they couldn't find a way past the Tommie defense to convert on anymore offensive chances.

The Tommies faced a 2-0 deficit heading into halftime. St. Thomas did not have a shot in the initial 45 minutes, while their opponents launched a total of nine attempts. In the early moments of the second half, the Bulldogs unleashed a flurry of five shots. Krenc made two saves, while the remaining attempts were blocked by Tommie defense or off target.

For nearly 20 minutes, the Bulldogs were unable to muster another shot on goal. In the final ten minutes of the match, the Tommies broke through the Drake defense and attempted three shots, putting two on goal. The match concluded in a hard-fought 2-0 loss for St. Thomas.
 
Home field advantage
The Tommies currently have a 2-1-1 record at home. Purple earned their first win of the season at home against Chicago State on Saturday, Sep. 16th. The Tommies continued play at home, facing Summit League opponents, falling to nationally ranked Denver and tying Kansas City. To wrap up the four-game homestand, the Tommies defeated Milwaukee 1-0.

The Mann, Krenc Tandem
Senior goalkeeper, Tucker Mann, has played four games in net for the Tommies, posting a 1-2-1 record during the 2023 season. Mann has played 381 minutes and posted a 1.89 GAA so far on the season.
 
His younger partner freshman goalkeeper, Moritz Krenc, has played six games in net for the Tommies, posting a 1-4-1 record during the 2023 season. Krenc has played 518 minutes and posted a 2.60 GAA so far this season.
 
Combined the tandem has posted a 2.30 GAA so far this season and a clean sheet to help the Tommies.
 
Scouting the Mavericks
Omaha Mavericks (4-5-3, 1-1-1 Summit League) are led by Head Coach Donovan Dowling in his second season. The Mavericks finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 8-6-2.

The Mavericks are coming off a 2-1 loss to No. 16-Ranked Missouri State. Midfielder, Junior Casillas scored the lone goal of the match. Casillas leads the Mavericks with six goals, two assists and 14 points in 12 games played.
 
Scouting the Golden Eagles
Oral Roberts Golden Eagles (6-2-2, 2-0-1 Summit League) is led by Head Coach Ryan Bush in his 16th season. The Golden Eagles finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 11-4-2.
 
Junior, Luis Flores currently leads Oral Roberts scoring nine goals and tallying one assist and leads the Summit League in goals. Freshman, Jakub Grzesiak, has a 1.00 GAA this season which leads the Summit league.
 
Oral Roberts is set to face Summit League opponent, Kansas City, on Saturday, Oct. 14th before traveling to St. Paul to dace the Tommies.
