Women’s Basketball holds off late surge for 70-64 win at South Dakota

1/28/2023 3:38:00 PM | Women's Basketball

Vermillion, S.D. -- St. Thomas Women's Basketball held off a late surge by South Dakota on Saturday afternoon, coming away with a 70-64 win in Vermillion, S.D. The Tommies built a 20-point lead heading into the fourth quarter for its first road win of the Summit League season in front of a crowd of 1,628 fans at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.

Jo Langbehn led the Tommies (8-13, 3-8 Summit) with 15 points in the game, including eight during the opening 10 minutes. St. Thomas led by as many as four points early in the game before the Coyotes (11-11, 7-4 Summit) took its only lead of the game, 14-13, with 2:24 in the first quarter.

After leading by four again, 23-19, going into the second quarter, balanced scoring and stout defense extended the lead to 14, 41-27, at halftime. The Purple limited the Coyotes to 3-of-14 shooting in the second, including scoring by just two USD student-athletes. St. Thomas saw five Tommies score in the quarter while shooting 7-of-13 from the floor and 3-of-6 from 3-point range while not giving away any points off turnovers.

St. Thomas again shot over 50 percent from the field in the third quarter, extending its lead to a game-high 22 points, 63-41, 35 seconds before the final 10 minutes.

Following a layup by Jordyn Lamker on the Tommies' first possession of the fourth quarter, St. Thomas went cold from the floor to allow South Dakota to get back into the game. The Coyotes went on a 15-0 run, sinking 6-of-10 from the floor and 3-of-5 from long range, while the Tommies missed 10 straight shots and gave away six turnovers.

Langbehn provided a much-needed spark for St. Thomas after putting in a second-chance layup with 31 seconds to play. The basket was under review for multiple minutes as referees looked to see if the Tommies avoided a shot clock violation. After the call on the floor was confirmed, St. Thomas made 3-of-6 free throws to seal the first ever victory over South Dakota.

Langbehn shot 6-of-7 from the field while Jordyn Lamker and Sammy Opichka contributed double-digit points off the bench. Opichka added 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, while Lamker added 12 points, a team high eight rebounds and tied a career high four blocks.

The Tommies shot 48.2 percent from the field (27-56), 47.1 percent from beyond the arc (8-17), and 8-of-11 from the free throw line (8-11) while the Coyotes went 43.6 percent from the floor (24-55), 36.8 percent from 3-point range (7-19), and 81.8 percent from the free throw line (9-11).

St. Thomas returns home Feb. 2-4 with a matchup against Omaha on Thursday and Denver on Saturday from Schoenecker Arena.
