Overtime loss at Arizona State for Men's Hockey
1/28/2023 11:27:00 PM | Men's Hockey
Tempe, Ariz. -- Host Arizona State never led in regulation time but was able to convert the game-winning goal 37 seconds into the 3-on-3 overtime period to take a 4-3 win over St. Thomas Men's Hockey in non-conference play Saturday night.
The Tommies (7-17-2) were swept for the first time in six weekend series, dating back to mid-November. Coach Rico Blasi's team took leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 but was unable to close out the win.
ASU (13-16) improved to 10-8 at home this season.
Luc Laylin, Tim Piechowski and Matthew Jennings scored the goals for St. Thomas, and four others scored a single assist. Jennings converted a penalty shot and tallied his first goal of the season.
Aaron Trotter had 30 saves in net and helped kill off all four Sun Devil power plays.
Quoting Coach Rico Blasi (on Skor North radio postgame show):
"I thought we started the game off well. A couple of goals they scored were our fault. We turned it over and made it easy for them. Obviously we have to clean that up. Our execution from our D-corps on out, we need to get better at that.
"I wasn't upset with our effort. I thought we did a pretty good job on the (penalty kill). We just made some ill-advised plays and turned it over Other than that it was a decent game on the road in a hostile environment.
"That's overtime, though, it goes back and forth and you have to get some saves and you have to score goals when you have opportunities, otherwise it's going the other way.
"We responded well (after Friday's 4-0 loss). We have to clean up our puck management. If we do that, we'll be in the game."
