Women's Soccer 'wins' last 20 minutes, starts 1-0
8/25/2022 2:11:00 PM | Women's Soccer
St. Paul, Minn. - Sophomore Arianna Sanchez converted in the 71st minute for her first collegiate goal to lead host St. Thomas Women's Soccer to a 2-0 non-conference win over Drake in Thursday's game at South Field.
The Tommies (1-0) added an insurance goal with :04 seconds left as sophomore Camryn Rintoul punched in a goal off a penalty kick. That scoring chance, Rintoul's first goal of her career, was set up as Drake's goalkeeper was issued a red card after a collision on a St. Thomas breakaway attempt.
Sophomore transfer Mariah Nguyen earned her first St. Thomas point as she assisted on Sanchez' goal.
It was the official season-opening contest for the Purple, who had a home game seven days earlier with UW-Green Bay halted in the 53rd minute by lightning with the Toms ahead 2-0. That Green Bay game for now is a no contest.
Drake, 8-7-5 last season, dropped to 1-2. St. Thomas avenged a two-overtime 1-0 road loss at Drake from 2021. It had a 7-3 edge in corner kicks and an 8-3 advantage in shots.
Goalkeeper Annie Bantner continued her solid play in goal. The St. Thomas defense has allowed just one goal over its last four outings, including two exhibitions and the Green Bay and Drake contests.
"Our girls really came out in the very beginning and starting setting the pace and setting it high, and (Drake) had to try and match us," said St. Thomas coach Sheila McGill. "That was really fantastic for us to put that level in ahead of time and know we are training at that level and ready.
"In the moments when it counted, we were able to (score) that goal. Last year (the momentum) was turning the other direction, now (the momentum) is turning in our direction. We kept the energy high. That last (penalty kick goal) at the end was a great finish by (Camryn), and (Arianna) had her first (goal) finish as well. It was fantastic to have their first college goals both be today in a big game and a big win.
"We want everyone to get as much playing time as we can, there's challenges in big games (to get minutes). At the same time upcoming this (Saturday and Monday), we should have time to be able to get everyone into the games and get a little bit more experience for other players who didn't get their moments today.
"We've been working really hard on keeping our speed high so that our speed of play and our high pressure defending really causes turnovers. It's been good from that side of it, and it's starting to pay off."
