Baseball shows grit again, holds off Oral Roberts, 4-3

5/7/2022 6:11:00 PM | Baseball

Tulsa, Okla. - Starter Graham Laubscher continued his shutdown ways and closer T.J. Constertina had a clutch bounce-back relief appearance to lead Tommie Baseball to Saturday's 4-3 road win over first-place Oral Roberts.

St. Thomas (13-25 overall, 7-10 Summit) has won eight of its last 12 games, including victories in four of its last six road contests.

Coach Chris Olean's Tommies showed no emotional hangover after Friday's 7-6, 10-inning defeat, a game in which the Golden Eagles rallied from a late 6-2 deficit and won in extra innings.

Contertina took Friday's loss as he allowed a leadoff single and a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the 10th inning. On Saturday, Constertina got the final four outs for his second save as he stranded the tying run aboard in both the eighth and ninth innings.

Freshman Ben Vujovich, who belted a grand slam on Friday, drove in two runs in Saturday's victory. The Toms scored twice in the top of the eighth inning to build a 4-1 lead and held off another late bid by ORU (29-15, 12-5).

The Tommie offense managed only eight baserunners on the day, including five via hits, but the visitors were content to play small ball and make the most of select scoring chances.

Laubscher was in a groove on the mound as he worked seven complete innings and allowed just one run, four hits and three walks with eight strikeouts. In his last five starts, Laubscher is 3-0 with a 1.58 ERA and 42 strikeouts over 34 innings. His 87 Ks lead the Summit League and rank him among the top 25 in Division I for strikeouts. He stranded two runners in the seventh inning with a pair of Ks to end the threat.

Efficient Offense

In the fourth inning, Sam Kulesa reached on an error, was bunted to second, and scored on Kyle Halverson's RBI single to tie the game 1-1.

The Toms took a 2-1 lead in the sixth inning on Matthew Enck's walk, Kulesa's single and Vujovich's sac fly.

The Purple extended the lead to 4-1 in the top of the eighth. Jake Porter walked, was bunted to second, and scored the first run on Enck's RBI double. Enck took third on a wild pitch and scored a key insurance run on Vujovich's RBI single.

Oral Roberts scored two runs in the last of the eighth, both unearned, before Constertina got a fly out to end the inning. In the ninth inning, a two-out single brought up Jake McMurray -- Friday's hero with a home run in the ninth and a game-winning walkoff double in the 10th. But Constertina coaxed McMurray to fly out to end Saturday's contest.

The teams close out the weekend series Sunday with a 1 p.m. game.

Tommie Notes

Kulesa extended his hitting streak to eight games.

Vujovich continued his hot streak at the plate. In his last 12 games he has helped the Purple take eight wins. He's batting .357 in the span with 15 RBI, 15 hits, four doubles, three home runs, and 10 runs.

In 18.1 innings over two games, St. Thomas pitchers have recorded 24 strikeouts and eight earned runs.

On Sunday, the Toms will attempt the win a series by another 2-1 margin for the fourth consecutive weekend.
