Offense slumps, Baseball drops Summit twinbill to Jacks

4/3/2022 4:55:00 PM | Baseball

St. Paul, Minn. - South Dakota State stroked four home runs on the day and rode strong starting pitching to record a 2-1, 6-1 doubleheader sweep of St. Thomas in Sunday's conference baseball doubleheader at Koch Diamond.

The Jackrabbits (9-15 overall, 3-3 Summit League) went 3-0 over the two-day Summit League series, outscoring the Tommies 13-5 and allowing just one earned run, no extra-base hits and three walks over the three contests.

Nine of the 13 SDSU runs scored on the weekend came as a result of five home runs, all to left field.

Sunday's games started at 10:30 a.m., in partial sunshine and a temperature near 40. As the more than five hours of baseball wore on conditions turned at times windy, cloudy, snowy and rainy. The day even included a 15-minute weather delay as a snowburst limited visibility.

St. Thomas (4-17, 1-5) was outhit 7-4 in game run and 9-5 in game two, and stranded 12 runners over the two games.

Charlie Bartholomew's RBI single in the ninth inning of game two provided the Tommies' lone RBI of the day. Avery Lehman had the team's only multi-hit performance as he went 2-for-4 in game one. Freshman Brigs Richartz had his hitting streak end at eight games with an 0-for-4 outing in game two.

The Purple received strong pitching in game one from freshman Evan Esch and relievers Carl Cano and Duke Coborn. Esch worked 5 2-3 innings and allowed only one earned run, six hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Cano, another freshman, pitched 1 1-3 scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Coborn, a redshirt sophomore, pitched two scoreless innings and allowed one hit with one strikeout.

In game two, Tommie starter Devon Schewe allowed a pair of home runs during his five-inning mound stint. Schewe struck out seven and gave up three runs, five hits and one walk.

On the three-game series, St. Thomas pitchers combined to strikeout 28 batters with 13 walks and allow 12 earned runs.

St. Thomas will travel to Fargo next weekend to play league-leading North Dakota State in an April 8-9-10 series.
