Game Chatter
Minnesota, 8-8 at home, is coming off a tough Big Ten series in Iowa City with three defeats to the Hawkeyes. The Gophers are 4-9 in games decided by one or two runs. They average five runs a game and allow seven runs a contest. Their pitchers average one strikeout an inning, and they have hit 32 home runs over 33 games. In two wins over St. Thomas over 18 innings, Gopher pitchers have allowed just one run, eight hits, no walks and no HBP.
Minnesota topped the Toms 12-0 on March 1 in U.S. Bank Stadium. Seven days ago in a rematch at Siebert, the Gophers erased a 1-0 Tommie lead with runs in the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings to take a 2-1 victory. The Toms had the potential tying run at third base with one out in the top of the ninth but were unable to extend the contest. Tommie redshirt sophomore RHP Duke Coborn allowed one run, three hits and three walks with three Ks in seven innings.
The Toms are scoring 3.5 runs a game and allowing 4.5 runs a contest. Their 21 losses include 15 one- or two-run defeats. That includes a 1-10 record in games decided by one run (0-4 mark in extra innings). The Toms, who regularly start 6-8 players from their D-III era, have only been shut out twice in 28 games (and none in their last 17 games) -- to Power 5 teams Minnesota and Northwestern.
On April 9-10, the Toms played their best series of 2022, against Summit leader North Dakota State, (won 6-0; lost 4-1 and 8-7). Tommie pitchers struck out 31 over 25 innings and as an offense the Purple outscored (14-12) and outhit (26-17) the Bison over the three contests. NDSU (19-10) came in 8-1 in its previous nine.
In Texas, the Toms had three close battles with Tarleton and posted their first back-to-back D-I road wins. After falling 6-5 in 10 innings, they rallied from five runs down to win 11-9; then won 6-3. Over 27 innings, their pitchers struck out 32; their fielders had no errors and their batters compiled 32 hits and 22 runs.
National Stats
Out of 300 D-I teams, Tommie season totals rank with the top national programs in three categories -- fielding percentage (.980, among top 15); strikeouts per nine innings (10.5, top 25); and ERA (4.32, top 60). Individually, Graham Laubscher ranks among the top 40 in Ks per nine innings (12.6).
