Minneapolis, Minn. - Redshirt sophomore Duke Coborn had his best outing in Division I pitcher, but host Minnesota rallied late to record a 2-1 non-conference victory over St. Thomas on a grey day at Siebert Field.
Looking to avenge a 12-0 loss to Minnesota six weeks earlier, the Tommies (5-20) took a 1-0 lead in the second inning. Freshman Brigs Richartz singled, was bunted to second, took third on freshman Ben Vujovich's infield single, and scored on Jake Porter's sac fly to center.
The score stayed at 1-0 through six innings. In his second start in D-I, Coborn stranded three runs in scoring position in the early frames. He retired 12 batters in a row from the third inning into the seventh before Ronald Sweeny walked with two out in the seventh inning. Sweeny stole second and came home with the tying run on Kyle Bork's two-out pinch RBI single on a 3-2 pitch.
Coborn, who lowered his season ERA to 2.04, allowed one run, three hits and three walks with three strikeouts over seven innings.
Freshman Carl Cano came on to pitch the eighth inning. He fanned two but allowed three consecutive hits. Minnesota (10-20) used Jack Kelly's RBI double with one out in the eighth inning to plate the eventual winning run.
The Purple threatened in the top of the ninth. Kyle Halverson singled, was bunted to second, then stole third with one out. But Gopher closer Will Semb was able to get the final two outs and strand Halverson at third.
Tommie Notes
Richartz has hit safely in four games in a row and 12 of his last 13 outings.
The Toms have 14 losses by one or two runs in their debut season in Division I. They are 1-9 in one-run decisions.
The Toms are 1-7 since March 27 but have been outscored just 30-22 in those eight contests.
St. Thomas plays another Purple team and another relative newcomer to Division I this weekend on the road in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Tarleton State, in its third D-I season since moving up from D-II, hosts the Toms in a Friday doubleheader and a Saturday single game in Stephenville, Texas. Tarleton came into Tuesday night's game against Incarnate Word with a 10-21 record.
