Softball falls in extras to Bradley, loses at No. 8 Missouri

Columbia, Mo. - St. Thomas softball (2-12) was handed a pair of losses on Saturday by No. 8 Missouri (15-4) and Bradley (9-8) at the Mizzou Classic.
Facing the 15th-ranked Tigers for the second-straight day, junior Isabelle True got the start on the mound for the Tommies and was unable to record an out. Sophomore Grace Bennett got the call in relief and worked three outs while allowing just one earned run in the bottom of the first inning.
Offensively, the Tommies were limited to zero runs over the first four frames, but the St. Thomas offense was able to get going in the final inning with three hits, two of which came from freshmen Kaitlyn Raymond and Brooke Ellestad. Sophomore catcher Maddie Grad singled up the middle with one out, as Raymond followed up with a single through the right side, setting up a sac-fly from senior Nicole Pieper. Ellestad would single up the middle to drive in Raymond and give the Purple their second run.
In game two, the Tommies suffered a heartbreaker in extra innings against the Braves, falling by a score of 4-3.
The St. Thomas pitching staff combined for seven innings of four earned run ball and six strikeouts against Bradley. Freshman Christina Crawford tossed 5.1 innings, allowing three runs, and striking out five. In relief, senior Kendall Hopkins allowed one run in 1.2 innings while striking out one Brave.
Down 2-0 in the top of the fourth, a one-out home run from senior third baseman Sarah Hudson, her third of the season, cut the deficit in half. After the Braves responded with a run in the bottom of the frame, St. Thomas would rally with a two-run inning in the sixth with an RBI single from Hudson and a Crawford RBI base hit to right center.
The Tommies would get a runner to second base in the top of the eighth on a walk and passed ball, but the team was unable to bring the go-ahead run in, and would lose in the bottom half of the eighth.
