Orlando, Fla. – The St. Thomas Women's Tennis Team started its Spring Break trip with a 4-3 win over West Georgia on Monday, the first of four-straight days of matches.
"A good performance from the team as a whole today stepping up for each other," said Head Coach Lois Arterberry. "Sometimes it can be tough when players are injured, but we got the job done and that's the most important thing."
The Tommies claimed the doubles point with the teams of sophomores Monterey Knewtson and Jannah El Nemr earning a 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot and the sister duo of freshmen Madeline and Abigail Bremel posted a 6-1 win in the No. 3 doubles line.
El Nemr played the No. 1 spot for the Purple and claimed the match by scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Knewtson claimed the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-3, 6-1, while Abigail Bremel scored the fourth point for the Tommies in the No. 6 line by scores of 6-4 and 6-0.
Also competing for the Purple on Monday were senior Olivia Paradise, sophomore Nicole Snezhko and senior Brooke Hapuku. Paradise lost the first set 6-3 and was leading in the second set 4-2 before the set was retired. Snezhko lost a three-set match in the No. 3 line by scores of 5-7, 6-3, 0-1. Hapuku competed in the No. 4 spot falling by scores of 6-3, 6-2.
"Tomorrow, we have a tough one against a top team in Stetson, so we are recovering and preparing for them," added Arterberry.
The Tommies return to action tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. as they face Stetson in Orlando.
