Lois Arterberry will enter her third year as St. Thomas' Head Tennis Coach in 2023-24. As it moved into NCAA Division I play starting in 2021-22, the University of St. Thomas' Women's Tennis program welcomed Lois Alexis Arterberry as head coach. She brings a strong resume as a player along with eight years of coaching experience at several Division I universities.
Arterberry joins St. Thomas after two seasons working with University of Missouri Women's Tennis, one as a volunteer aide and the second as an assistant coach. She joined the Tigers' program after one season as a volunteer assistant for North Carolina-Asheville women's tennis (2018-19).
She also has three seasons of head coaching experience. In fall 2017, she guided the women's team at Eastern Illinois. She previously served as head coach of the Jackson State (Miss.) men's and women's programs for two seasons (2015-17), and helped the men's team make back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Tournament plus secure its first conference title in 18 years (2016). The JSU women's team also experienced success with back-to-back HBCU Championship finals appearances (2016, 2017).
She earlier made her coaching debut with a two-year stint as a graduate coach at her alma mater, Southern University in Baton Rouge, La.
Arterberry was a standout junior-age player and represented her country at the Caribbean and Central American Games. A five-time recipient of the Grenada Sports Woman of the Year award, she was ranked as the top junior player and overall and among the top women's players in her homeland.
She went on to compete collegiately for Southern University. A three-time champion in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Arterberry helped her team make three NCAA Tournament appearances from 2011-13. She earned both her Bachelors (2013) and Master's (2015) degrees from Southern.
"I'm grateful to get the opportunity to join the Tommie family and to work with an incredible group of young women," Coach Arterberry explained. "A huge thanks to Athletic Director Phil Esten and the athletic staff for believing in my vision for the program.
"I look forward to working with this incredible group of like-minded leaders as we build a culture of unity and create an unmatched student experience for our athletes. My goals for the program include preparing the athletes for success in the classroom, on the court and in their lives. My family and I are extremely happy to be here."
"We are thrilled to welcome Coach Arterberry, her husband, Marquis, and daughter, Madisyn to the St. Thomas community," said Phil Esten, Vice President and Director of Athletics. "Lois brings extraordinary experience to St. Paul, both as a player and coach, and I'm excited about our future with her. Just as important, her approach as a mentor, educator and life coach will offer our women's tennis student-athletes an impactful experience both on and off the court."
Tommie Women's Tennis' move to Division I play in 2021-22 is expected to include several top players from a conference-champion team of 2021, the program's last season competing in Division III. The Purple won 14 consecutive matches and tied for ninth place nationally.
