Softball handed a pair of losses by Big Ten teams

Tampa, Fla. - St. Thomas softball (3-18) battled in a pair of losses to Big Ten teams Ohio State (16-4), 5-2, and Purdue (17-14), 5-4, on Friday at the USF Invitational.
After finding themselves down 4-0 in the bottom of the fourth, Tommie freshman Brooke Ellestad lined an opposite field two-run home run over the left field fence, the third of the season for the newcomer. Ellestad is tied with Sarah Hudson for the team lead in home runs this season.
Senior Megan Baniecke went all seven innings against the Buckeyes, allowing just four earned runs, and striking out three. Baniecke forced nine ground outs in the game.
Ellestad went 2-3 at the plate with a pair of RBI and teammate Nicole Pieper tallied a hit and a run scored. Sophomore Katie Goelz finished with a base hit and is 3-9 in her last three games played.
Against the Boilermakers, the Tommies pounced out to a 2-0 lead, after a Hudson first-inning RBI single and a home run from Cassidy Carby in the second frame. Carby now has two home runs in the 2022 campaign.
Following a three-run inning by Purdue, St. Thomas evened up the score at 3-3 on a Hudson opposite field base hit, driving in Ellestad. Once again, the team found itself trailing by one run, as Coryn Jacobson went oppo to score Kaitlyn Raymond and balance the game, 4-4, in the top of the sixth.
Christina Crawford struck out three batters in her six innings against the Boilermakers. The Tommies outhit Purdue, 11-9, and Ellestad led the team with three hits and two runs scored. Ellestad, Hudson, and Jacobson went a combined 7-11 at the plate with three RBI and a walk, scoring twice.
