Baseball starts with extra-innings loss; wins second game 14-1

Cedar Rapids, Iowa -- Kyle Halverson slapped a pair of two-run home runs, but Tommie Baseball dropped a 6-5 road decision in 11 innings to Mount Mercy University in non-conference play Wednesday.

St. Thomas bounced back to score a 14-1 win over Iowa Wesleyan to close out the day trip. Freshman Ben Vujovich drove in four runs, including three-home home run to cap a nine-run third-inning surge for the Purple (3-11). Duke Coborn worked four innings to get the pitching win with five strikeouts and one earned run allowed.

Brigs Richartz had a triple and single and drove in three runs. Kirby Pieri and Charlie Bartholomew each had two hits. Tommy Golbrandson and Parker Mathieson each had their first D-I hits.

Carl Cano, Will Nigut and Bryce Leedle each pitched one scoreless inning.


Mount Mercy 6, St. Thomas 5 (11 inn.)

The Mustangs (12-6) got a leadoff triple in the 11th inning and won on a fly-ball RBI single to deep center over the head of the drawn-in center fielder. They outhit St. Thomas 13-10.

The Tommies have eight losses by one or two runs, including five one-run defeats decided in walk-off fashion in the ninth inning or extra innings.

T.J. Constertina pitched well to keep the Toms in the game with 2 1-3 shutout innings before leaving after the 10th inning. He came on with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning and got an inning-ending fly out on the first pitch. He also got a an inning-ending strikeout in the 10th inning with two runners aboard.

St. Thomas' first four pitchers combined to strike out 15 MMU batters over 10 innings.

Avery Lehman had an RBI triple in the second inning and also threw out a runner at home plate to end the bottom of the second. Halverson, Bartholomew and Vujovich had two hits apiece.

MMU's Kale Orman and Jacob Lodge combined to pitch six scoreless innings sixth inning on and strike out seven to close out the victory.

St. Thomas is off until next Tuesday March 22 when it plays one game in Iowa City against the Iowa Hawkeyes. The Toms' Summit League debut is March 25-27 at Omaha.
