Crawford strikes out 19 for Softball against Evansville

3/13/2022 6:26:00 PM | Softball

Murray, Ky. - St. Thomas softball (3-14) split its Sunday doubleheader against Evansville (13-6) and Murray State (13-8), winning in extras against the Purple Aces.

Game one witnessed a masterful pitching performance by freshman hurler Christina Crawford, dazzling Evansville hitters to the tune of 19 strikeouts over nine innings, earning her first collegiate pitching win in the extra-inning matchup. Crawford's previous high in strikeouts was five, which came against Bradley on March 5.

The Tommies ended a 13-game losing streak with the 5-4 win against the Purple Aces on Sunday, and the team was helped by a strong offensive performance from junior outfielder Coryn Jacobson. Jacobson tallied three hits, her first multi-hit performance at the Division I level and drove in two runs. Jacobson also tallied the game-winning RBI on a single to center to score third baseman Sarah Hudson.

St. Thomas jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, as Jacobson recorded a bases-loaded RBI walk, and Hudson scored on a wild pitch. The team would add another run in the bottom of the fourth on a sac fly from freshman shortstop Brooke Ellestad, which brought home catcher Maddie Grad.

After a three-run Evansville fifth forced extra-innings, neither team would score till the ninth inning, when the Purple Aces took a 4-3 lead. The Tommie would respond with a Hudson RBI base hit down the left field line and a Jacobson RBI-single to tie and win the game.

The Tommies fell in game two, 8-0, at Murray State. Mackenzie Rudy recorded the lone base hit for the Tommie offense in the game. Senior Kendall Hopkins, pitching in relief, struck out two Racers.
