Minneapolis, Minn. -- Jack Liffrig shut out St. Thomas on three hits over 7 2-3 innings and the host Gophers stroked five home runs in Tuesday night's 12-0 non-conference baseball win over the Tommies at U.S. Bank Stadium.
St. Thomas (2-6) managed just four baserunners -- two singles by Charlie Bartholomew, and a single each by Avery Lehman and Brigs Richartz.
Liffrig struck out just one but had no walks and got 14 fly or line outs. He benefited from two diving catches by center fielder Brett Bateman.
Minnesota (3-6) pounded 12 hits off eight St. Thomas pitchers. The Gophers broke open the game with a six-run second inning that pushed the lead to 8-0.
U of M catcher Chase Stanke homered deep to center field in both the first and second inning, driving in five runs. Stanke had five homers in nine games so far this season.
Easton Bertrand and Ronald Sweeney also hit solo homers during the early surge.
Seven St. Thomas relievers worked one inning apiece, with a few making their D-I debuts.
This was the first Tommie-Gopher baseball meeting as D-I opponents, and first since a May 2012 game at old Siebert Field. The teams are scheduled to play three separate nine-inning games at the new Siebert complex during the month of April.
Tommie coach Chris Olean gave full credit to Minnesota for taking early control of the game.
"They're a talented team, they're a Big Ten team, and they acted like one today," Olean said. "We made some mistake pitches that they just hammered. You definitely see how some of their strength and size makes a difference. If you make a mistake, they get a barrel on it. They did a nice job of hitting the ball. We get to see them three more times, hopefully we can give them a better game next time we see them."

This is the first of 14 March games for the Purple and the start of a difficult stretch of games. Next up they travel to Omaha this weekend for Friday, Saturday and Sunday non-conference games against Creighton.
