Omaha, Neb. - Clutch hits were in short supply Friday night for Tommie Baseball in a 3-1 road loss to Creighton in the first game of a three-game non-conference series.
The Toms (2-7) had nine hits, one off their season high, led by Charlie Bartholomew's two singles. Ben Vujovich had a leadoff triple in the second inning but didn't advance. He later reached on a walk in the ninth inning but was again left on base.
The Purple stranded five runners in scoring position. Five of their seven losses have come by one or two runs.
The host Bluejays (3-5) plated all three runs on RBI singles in the second and third innings. Three Creighton pitchers walked just one and struck out 11.
Freshman Walker Retz continued his solid pitching for the Tommies. The Boyceville, Wis., native made his third college start and worked seven innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks, with eight strikeouts.
Freshman Evan Esch struck out one and walked one in one scoreless inning of relief.
St. Thomas scored in the first inning on Max Moris' one-out single, a two-out passed ball, and Bartholomew's RBI single. Bartholomew had two of St. Thomas' nine hits.
The teams are set to play another nine-inning game Saturday at 4:30 p.m.
